That works for phones (and you can download it from the internet if out of date). It doesn't work for cameras which are usually turned off until you want to take pictures.

It's not possible for FOSS to compete with Google in Google's niche — try it and you'll see why. It's possible to find a different niche and expand there.

It's not a platform, it's server-side software for creating a platform.

Do people go looking for videos?

I think I go to YouTube because it has interesting content, and the fact it's in video form isn't particularly relevant. Some content must be in video form but not all of it. I also follow several blogs, and Hacker News. I used to use Reddit when it was less enshittified, the way I use YouTube now. I don't know why I don't follow Nebula - I have a subscription because I want to support more independent platforms.

People get tired of trying to push back a tsunami with their bare hands. Other people were born into the tsunami and just accept that everything is underwater.

Video looks better on streaming platforms at higher resolutions, even when the pixels are just interpolated, because it increases the compressed bitrate.

Yes. The new generation will grow up without ever owning any media, and will not be able to conceive of the idea of owning media.

Their definition: if a substantial group of buyers has no reasonable choice of seller, it's a monopoly situation

Canvas pixel readback is a common fingerprinting vector, isn't it blocked behind a permission popup?

This is a clearly politicized clickbait title. What actually happened?

IIRC the one that got Kirked was about to start, or had recently started, denying more than a fixed amount of time for anesthesia. If the operation runs longer than expected, you won't be anesthetised for all of it.

invokedynamic comes to mind.

It was later used to implement lambda expressions but originally had no use in the Java language and isn't tailored to lambda expressions.

Getting a GPS fix from the satellites alone with no internet connection or stored data takes a few hours, not seconds. First you have to listen to the very slow data channel that tells you where the satellites are that takes a few hours to transmit the complete set before repeating.

When they oppose AB1043 (California parental controls act) it seems like they are taking that stance, that the government must not regulate computers because they are computers. What's different about the Grok situation?
