I think it's too easy to say it "makes no sense" when you have no skin in the game. If this HN post stays active for a while, it's likely that there will be a lot of "there is no excuse" and "shoulda just had more women lol"; which is probably why they tried shooping this to begin with. People would probably have criticized the image either way, even if this particular attempt to quell that is... clumsy.

According to the article, the women actually were along on the trip, they just were not in the initial group photo.
And it can be easily inferred that they were asked if it was OK to be put in the photo, and agreed.
That's no excuse.
The article also notes that other attendees not included in the photo declined to be photoshopped in. However, due to the gender ratio, the twittersphere were calling it a diversity shooping.
