The article is a bit confusing. VPN encrypts traffic between IoT and user’s devices. It doesn’t encrypt traffic between IoT devices and internet. Also, the traffic is usually encrypted with TLS. What the article had to say, IoT devices are particularly vulnerable to attacks if ports are open. Tailscale allows accessing them without exposing them.

A mesh VPN can be risky because every device is connected to every other device by default. So, once the weakest machine is hacked, the attacker can connect to any other device. Sure, you can use ACLs, but that has a learning curve, and I doubt people do that.

Tailscale makes accessible IoT devices remotely. But remote-iot does the same
