Why do ChatGPT and Claude's web UIs slow to a crawl during long conversations?

Both have simple chat UIs yet suffer from severe performance degradation - input lag, browser freezing, memory bloat.

Is it just me?

Given the engineering talent at these companies, what makes this problem so hard to solve?
