If there had been decisive pressure on Hamas after their violent incursion, the current conflict would probably be over.
Instead many decided that the attack was somehow justified, globalize the intifada, etc. pp.
You have to defend decisively against such calls to war, that is unfortunately the logic of the middle east and it isn't Israel that decides this logic. If the author has honest attempts to peace, she should encourage Hamas to unconditionally surrender. Some self-reflection is expected from Palestinians as well and the current issue is Hamas started the latest war and still has hostages from that time.
The PLO would be a better patron than Hamas and to build a profile a "tough" stance on Israel can be forgiven. But at some point in the future there needs to be progress.
> In the latest plan, there are absolutely no guarantees that aid will be allowed into Gaza, that control will be ceded by Israel, that Israel will pull back or that Gaza will be rebuilt
Israel has won the military conflict. At that point it is usually suggested to surrender. And yes, the unfortunate reality is that you are partially dependent on the conflicting party for further progress. Especially if Israel already gave Palestinians that chance after withdrawing from Gaza. That this chance wasn't realized isn't on Israel.
That fantasy of Israel military rule is completely off base. We just saw why Israel needs a modern and strong military. That is on the action of Hamas as well for that matter, completely disregarding the rocket attacks from Hezbollah and Gazans.
Palestinians could have live much more prosperous if they could just have worked through their hate of Israel.
If Israel didn't blockade Gaza, Egypt would. You have to stop firing rockets at other countries for blockades to be withdrawn. Simple and easy logic. And any leadership of Gaza must enforce this if they honestly want peace.
