I wish the article explained why a software issue would cause a physical recall. Can they not update themselves?
The article states that it is a software recall so I don't think they are doing any physical recall of the cars. If you are wondering why they have to declare a recall even if its just for updating the software, this is because car manufactures under US law must declare a recall if they gain knowledge that a car they manufacture has certain safety defects. So even if the fix will be performed via a software update they still have a legal responsibility to declare the recall. The reasoning behind this is that it gives notice to people who may have been harmed by the defect (so they can sue or seek redress of their harm) and it gives notice to operators of the vehicle that they need ensure their software is updated.
The same is true for coding agents. It does not mean you don't need to look at the code any more than you do not need to look at the roads with autopilot just because the AI will do it all for you.
So let this glitch be a lesson for what will come later.
