There was animosity between Redhat engineers and Canonical engineers. The Redhat engineers were not particularly thrilled that Ubuntu was the hottest Linux distro. They themselves did all the work on GNOME.
The theme was that Canonical was not sponsoring as many engineers to work on GNOME and other essential projects. I think Canonical had trouble getting UI design changes pass through GNOME.
Canonical wanted to pursue a different UI with Unity. It was supposed to be the UI even for mobile devices. They spent a lot of money.
