I can tell you there will never come a time when American or UK refugees will be able to look to Poland or Ukraine or Afghanistan or India for rescue. It is that level of idealism and high trust naïveté that makes first world civilizations nice places to live but also dooms them to be taken advantage of by tribal mooches if there is no careful pragmatism.

No that’s never happened to India you’re right. If you “support” relocation of a Ukrainian like Iryna Zarutska they might end up moving to Charlotte, NC where they get stabbed on a train. Road to hell paved with good intentions and all that.

Not really. Just mortified at how incapable the people we have been supposedly helping for decades are after just a short stop in funding.

Depends on where and what work they are doing.

Just another perspective, no snark intended. I don’t see how helping “refugees” is some objective good.

Donating to charities or NGOs might be more harmful than anything you've ever done.

I agree, which is why it’s too early to make such grandiose claims about deep learning theory.

Idk to me this is just redescribing what deep neural networks do without actually explaining why anything happens. I guess it "unifies" things but I am kinda over most unifying theories. Everything is Bayesian, everything is a graph or a group or some other fancy geometric structure, everything is a category. Ultimately the best framework is whatever is useful enough to explain what's happening in such a way that a practitioner can manipulate the model towards a desired outcome. In other words, where is the knob? The tool they share may be interesting and I hope to play with it to see what happens at different levels of noise applied to the labels.

I'm having a hard time understanding what IP of value could have possibly been generated in less than 8 months to make it worth $400 million. I guess it's just spending some stock into hiring some very smart experienced people to get ahead in the life sciences domain.

Then there isn't really anything to argue over. No one should have to convince you. Either you see its value or you don't.

They have money. It’s taken from the rest of us and given to them. The rules you follow in life will be based on the behavior of the bottom quintile, the taxes you pay are to support the bottom quintile, the greatest risks to your life and property will come from the bottom quintile, the dearth of comfortable public spaces is because you have to allow the bottom quintile to be there, our zoning laws are developed for fear of the bottom quintile.

The bottom quintile gets everything handed to them and it's still not enough. We all live at the mercy of them and their dysfunction.

Like half of our budget goes to welfare (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Income Security, etc). https://www.usaspending.gov/explorer/budget_function

The problem is the promotion of values and behaviors that plague a low-trust society. I think making excuses for it is truly inappropriate and immoral.

The job isn't finished if a complaint has to go viral every time slack has an oversight and threatens to delete nonprofit chat data within 7 days. The comment you're calling unprocessed rage and tar-and-feathering just said it's more than a simple mistake. If anything your comments have been harsher to individuals.
