No matter how you spin this, it was a bad day and could have been a lot worse. You might hate the man but going out like that would not have been a good day for the US. It would go down like Bobby Kennedy as a dark milestone in our shared history. Happy it was a near miss instead of the reason for a state funeral.

A strategy that was used in my industry to address obsolescence like this was to embrace whitelisting software and a least function mentality.

Hmm hear me out, go to a public website and add black space below any video or picture with random adjectives that are your satire review of that piece of art then feed those into the ai model and tell it to ignore any text.

Fun fact when in 2 year school for electronics engineering technology we learned the current flow with the electrons, and in my 4 year electrical engineering school I learned it by following electron holes.

You'll find basic electrical circuits books sometimes have an electron flow edition.

Love how articles these days always catch the person in the main photo with the mouth open or eyes in an unnatural state.

AI can help those of us on the edges of what the "coder" of an environment is. Things like getting the right syntax for a given set of pseudocode instructions. Background is EE, inherited an airgapped DCS with everything from things running Fortran from the early 1980s to modern controllers in a heavily regulated industry. Time savings do matter. And for low end little things we could never get an external contract on we are enabling those that take more of the system owner type role to have more tools in their bag for response.

If this were a serious long term fix congress would have put it in the omnibus bill that they paid their donors off with.

I was turned off to reading in 7th grade by a teacher that required mandatory books that were her favorites but the topics consisted of 1800s gilded age parties, gossip amongst the upper class of people at that time and absolutely no fantasy or adventure.

Before that I was the top reader in the summer reading program going back to first grade highest in the school for each grade level. After that class I kind of fell out of the practice of reading to enjoy books until I was out of college.

I picked up the habit of reading and listening to audiobooks in 2014 3 years after college because I was doing a lot of 6-8 hour drives between my home town and a vendor for a project.

If I could say one thing to that teacher, just because you like a book, forcing someone else to read that book doesn't make it a good book for that person.

I thought for a second what if the whistleblowers get into witness protection, then I looked up what planes the us Marshalls have ... It's not looking good for the whistleblowers.

Recommendations in article are sound, zero trust infrastructure is a nice to have.

Probably need something similar to a wake up call some industrial companies got with stux in the 2010s or hell their insurance company charging the sh*t out them unless they fix some things.

At my company I'm in it's 6th reorganization in 13 years. The term used here is golden handcuffs. Where you're paid very well but you're in a middle of nowhere facility so any position you apply for has to be just right or it's not worth it.

I know this is a odd niche part of the job market but if you have system admin experience and have an engineering degree look at most large electrical utilities or contracting firms for design, they need people that understand how to setup a server and how to build virtual machines and how to configure a switch. But their HR departments are very selective about the degree has to be engineering. They are in person jobs though so that might not be for those who have gotten use to the remote work life.
