Oh, fascinating. The latest one was definitely monohydrate - maybe I was using HCL years ago and just don't remember. I'll look into that. Thanks!

I feel like for me it would be thwarted by the fact creatine seems to completely mess up my sleep. I don't remember that from when I was younger, but recently tried adding it to my diet and had to bail.

Omnipod for the win. But, yeah, I have a bunch of disposable needles in my kit as a backup.

Even so, travel is stressful. My carry on is full of backup pods/sensors. But now that my insurance is being annoying and only filling a month at a time, I don't always have an extra...

Or just bring a bunch of disposable needles with you and draw from your vials that you already have for filling your pump.

Very cool.

Just fyi, the GitHub links to some of the docs (like self-hosting) give 404, as do some of the internal links in the docs.

I hope I don’t miss it when you post!

I’ve wanted to make a ribbon mic but haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve seen where people use Mylar emergency blankets as the membrane for condenser mics. The closest I’ve gotten is accidentally having a capacitor in a radio act as a microphone where it shouldn’t :)

There is a /r/3dprintedinstruments subreddit that if you sort by best of all time has a lot of good stuff.

Fipple flutes like recorders and ocarinas tend to be easy to start with. I also had good luck with the Modular Fiddle [https://openfabpdx.com/download/modular-fiddle-complete-desi... .

I don’t know how niche they are, but a few I’ve done in the past

- 3D printed musical instruments. Print other designs or contribute your own

- lock picking. When you really get into it, you modify locks to make them more of a challenge and mail them to people

- Ham radio is hundreds of sub-hobbies in a trench coat. I’m currently mainly interested in linearizing switch-mode amplifiers, but was doing fox hunting for a bit (radio direction finding), and periodically do POTA (transmitting from parks)

Ooh! What kind of capsules?

I don’t know what the regulations are in your country (looks like you are maybe in Canada?), but in many countries it is straightforward to get an amateur radio license, and then you can have all sorts of fun (under the rules).

Amateur radio is pretty approachable and has lots of opportunity to go down those rabbit holes.

Seconding an old ARRL handbook.

Is there a way I can see which would run on a raspberry pi?

I sometimes would bring ear-protection headphones that I'd wear over my earbuds to muffle the train noise.

I used an Akai LPK25 with my iPhone (using the Camera Connection Kit and a combined usb hub/dac) and an app called Simply Piano. They make a wireless version of that now that would simplify the setup a great deal. It is a mini keyboard and the keys are quite small, but in my experience it was fine for the beginner stuff (and the keyboard is useful in general later). As I said before, I stuck with this until the app started using keys outside the range I had.

Now, as for "did I proceed with more serious learning" - I alternate though a ton of hobbies. So I moved on after that, though still go back to it from time to time. But I also have other musical interests and it was helpful to those as well.

Also did a lot of music on the commute on my iPhone with Korg Gadget (and Caustic before that). Sometimes with a keyboard, sometimes without.

I used to get so much done on my BART commute. Also learned piano on a little 25 key midi keyboard until the program I was learning from started needing a 26th key.

I'm amused she said they included it "in case somebody out there liked ugly bright red and yellow" and that "the 'Fluorescent' theme was also pretty ugly, but it didn't have a catchy name, so I've never heard anything about it."

Because I loved the Fluorescent theme.

Having it automatically follow tardigrades is so cool! It sounds like great fun. Did you make the ML model for tracking them?

I've wanted to make this the Openflexure Microscope (https://openflexure.org/projects/microscope/) but it is behind the backlog of all sorts of other things.

Ooh! Tell us about microscope making as a hobby!

Having Google Translate take that into French and then back gave me "The passengers of this jumbo jet, caught in a quagmire resembling an ocean liner, found a happy accident in this chaotic and surprising landing." I quite like both sentences.
