> “intelligence explosion”

> Well, that didn't happen.

Not only that, but in my cynical eyes the proliferation of LLMs has triggered a stupidity explosion. Either that, or it just made it blatantly obvious by how much stupidity we have been surrounded the whole time without realizing it. No other development demonstrated so clearly that the dark ages where we believed in sorcery and miracles have never really ended.

Wow, another bunch of people who give up engineering to satisfy their addiction to speed.

You're ignoring that AI coding attracts a whole new crop of people who would never have touched computers before. We live in interesting times.

So when I clone that repo, am I downloading > 370 GiB, or when and how is that being pulled in?

And can I leave out the web part? I cannot in good conscience run npm on my machine (it's not even installed).

So it nearly didn't cause bankruptcy? That's nearly great.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for open-weight models, but you still need to be careful what you use LLMs for.

And it costs at least twice the amount of tokens, so a full win for LLM providers.

That's just laziness. Analog systems are even messier, but they have procedures and regulations that keep the catastrophes to a minimum.

So it wasn't even anything related to the app's purpose, it was a frivolous surveillance SDK that got people killed.

The "compose" key was a new rabbit hole for me. Very handy.

> Seems that HN's auto-headline rewriting in this case has made a critical error :)

Software trying to be smart always runs that risk.

I'm using LLMs as a search engine replacement. The coding is all me. Writing the code was never the bottleneck.

> AI Confidence Theater

That's a benign term for it. Actually, it's lies, damn lies, and fucking god-damn lies. It's the super-mega-overdrive version of every principle that ads are based on. Like they are afraid we still haven't understood what makes ads tick, so they give us the practical in-your-face demo. And they were successful. I'm not believing a single word anyone remotely related to that business says anymore.

Listen to The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967. It's bureaucratic language, which could put you to sleep. But then it also contains some ideas that sound utterly unrealistic and utopian in our current times, even as mere aspirations. Thinking about what we've lost since 1967 makes me lose my sleep.

> There is nothing cool about it either.

The "cool" thing about it is that LLM suppliers will own the workforce of the employers who switched so those employers will be at their mercy. Total power, untold profits.

How do they do it? Is it even still possible to make up stories that sound more absurd than reality?
