Did you even read the email? It's an extremely boring standard billing notification that explains exactly why that person received it "You're receiving this because your organization is using the GitHub Code Quality public preview." and when it would be come into affect.

It's not a small print somewhere, or one of these weekly app store subscriptions that run up high bills because someone clicked "Yes" in a game.

It's like calling a Netflix renewal email a "shakedown" just because they send you an email giving you a heads up that your trial will convert into a paid subscription.

Sending a billing notification to someone who has no billing information on file, but is part of an organization where someone probably enabled that beta feature ("You're receiving this because your organization is using the GitHub Code Quality public preview.") isn't a shakedown.

What about this email is a "shakedown"?

That's exactly what configuration profiles are for. They work on macOS, iOS, tvOS etc. and you can configure them with a GUI app from Apple (https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/install-or-remove-con...)

There's space for more than one self-hosted chat app in the world. Also very ignorant comment towards a project someone probably spend a lot of time on.

Having a policy and what happens in the real world are most of the time very different things (Understandably, as the line between work and personal time is often blurry).

It's developed by a french company, so that confusion can't be that critical.

Someone is still hosting the content and paying for resources just like with every other service distributed or not so it doesn't really add anything new to the equation.

> This app is currently not available in your country or region.

Is there actually reason to not just check all the countries in the list in the app store?

They have two billion monthly active users worldwide. There's many parts of this world that run on Meta (WhatsApp / Instagram) for things from government communication to every business only having IG pages or doing business through it.

It's about the "in which scenario" question of the OP, not this dating ad in particular.

You don't always know that, you can have an open ended license with an option to get it revoked in the future with some notice period. I'd be pretty sure that PlayStation also had that in their terms and covered themselves legally for that option.

Don't get hung up on this specific example of the dating ad.

There's a difference between awareness campaigns and click / conversion campaigns and if there's some ads for a garden chair and your friend is sitting on it you'll definitely remember it more than some random model. Or clothes that are advertised on your body. Not saying that's the future we want, but it would definitely work for a while.

> In what scenario would pulling in a friend's profile photo create a useful ad?

Exactly in the scenario you just described. You still remember it and you are actively talking about it years after the fact.

That’s why selling anything to developers is no fun, they don’t know how to value their time.

Because it’s still pretty early in this journey and there’s some exclusivity deals to be made.
