Anyway, I used to have an alter ego. But I stopped using it for years, then one day a guy I never met got really mad at me because he didn’t want to use my nickname. It was an odd moment because I had never met him and don’t even use that nickname. He just heard it from someone else and the existence of a nickname apparently made him angry.
I quit shortly after because the manager who was also on the call didn’t even react as this guy I never met yelled at me for reasons that made no sense.
Which begs the question, why not bank on the current reality where some jobs favor women and some favor men, due to conscious personal choices made by those men and women?
I check HN once per day when I wake up and only rarely otherwise. I got the social media addiction out of my system years ago on a forum. It was horrible, I had to lock myself out using repeated sha1-hashing which required me to spend many hours of CPU time to get access back.
So glad to be done and over with that sort of addiction. Social media is as addictive as cigarettes or booze and we are way behind on treating it in the same ways.
I just recently decided to draw a line in the sand here. I don’t want to be interrupted during weekend dinners with fire alarms. I don’t cause fire alarms, I don’t have the requisite extreme compensation to justify the stress (and don’t really want it), so no.
People will often squeeze whatever they can out of you until you push back. So push back.
Tons of kids ride their bikes around my parents neighborhood. They are always fiddling on their phone while riding. It seems so sad to me, not much different than if they were all smoking cigarettes. They literally can’t help themselves.
