The Economist is to the City of London (the financial center masquerading as a local authority, not the metropolis) what Pravda was to the Soviet Communist Party. Useless as a source of truth, but invaluable to find out who was going to be purged and you should disown stat. Similarly The Economist is useful as a barometer of conventional wisdom in as very specific demographic. Their science and arts section can be very good at times, however.

Replacing Aspirin with Acetaminophen/Paracetamol was absurd. Reyes’s syndrome was nowhere as prevalent as acetaminophen overdoses, which are a horrible way to go.

Example: I only buy basic Logitech B110s wired mice. No vendor software needed to activate mostly useless extra functionality, compatible with every single OS, including OpenBSD which doesn't support Bluetooth. In this case, no (driver) software is the best software.

No, no software is the best software.

BTW, the title should say "(2019)".

They have an equally baroque list of people who can vouch for you in passport applications:

Reminiscent of Borges' list: https://thewhippet.org/the-whippet-134-those-that-tremble/

They were very cheap, and some like Landau and Lifschitz's textbooks on physics, world-class (and extremely challenging, volume 1 on mechanics assumed mastery of the calculus of variations).

Swiss law does require an overwhelming majority of the value of a product be made in Switzerland to use Swiss flag branding, or even Swiss landmarks or other signifiers of Swiss-ness. That's why Toblerone had to remove the drawing of the Matterhorn they've had since forever on the side of their triangular tubes, because some production has been shifted to Poland.

Yes, cheaper ones can be very thin, to save on material and produce twice as many buttons.

The trick to identify genuine shell buttons is to to touch one against your upper lip. A shell button will feel cool to the touch, a plastic one won't.

Premium shirts still have shell buttons. Zebra mussels are too small to make buttons, however.

> the idea of homogeneous nation states is more like rooted in the enlightenment.

More precisely the Peace of Westphalia, which was a deal between the crowned heads of Europe to stop rocking the boat, and the absolute opposite of what the Enlightenment wanted since it was designed to consolidate royal political control.

I've taken to using the Swedish locale for that very reason (French-American living in the UK).

His post inspired me to change form <html lang=en> to <html lang=en-US>, to make it clear I do not write in the British's quaint dialect of American.

My iKBC MF87v2 from 2018. I like it so much I bought a spare, even though it cost $170 at the time. Double-shot light-through PBT keycaps so the labels won't wear off or the keys develop that yucky slick finish, a solid block of aluminum that's 1.8kg so it's not going to shift on the desk, nice thocky MX Blue switches and a Tenkeyless layout without annoying numeric keypad, because I'm not an accountant.

I keep a Ducky One 3 with silent red switches at work because I am not a sociopath.
