It's very popular in rural US where running wired broadband is cost prohibitive.

There are many parts of the US that are very spread out, and thus running wires to every home is expensive without subsidies.

I don't switch browsers just for one site.

Besides, (and I know this is an assumption,) it appears the problem is the API that Refined Hacker News was written to. I suspect Firefox will also end-of-life the API soon.

This broke my heart:

> Despite coming from a big, musical family, Tyler and Sullivan never had children.

> I absolutely adore children.

> I did have a miscarriage when I was 40, I left it too late, you know?

I feel like, if you get into that situation, try to adopt or become a foster parent.

> The study looked at people who had read a book, magazine, or newspaper; listened to an audiobook; or read an e-book.

Uhm, what about Facebook, web-based news articles, and internet message boards? What about video games that involve significant reading?

The above statement is just so biased about what reading is, that I discarded the article as alarmist!

Just because someone isn't reading what you want them to, doesn't make them illiterate.

> Even if you think it is preferable at an individual level, there are good reasons to question the social value of the logistical complexity that it necessitates. Home delivery of single-packaged items entails an entirely different cost structure than freight trucks driving to consumer-facing warehouses delivering entire pallets of goods to be driven home by customers themselves.

Ok, so 100 people can all drive to the store, or one delivery truck can drive to everyone's house. (Ignoring the packaging waste for a second,) I suspect delivery of single items cuts back significantly on trips to the store.

When I was a kid, pre-internet, my dad took me to the local library and checked out some books that explained how an engine works.

These animations are so much better than what I had!

Paragraph #2 directly answers your question:

> More than one-third of all corporate money contributed to this year's November elections, and primary elections leading up to them, has come from the crypto industry, making it the top corporate political spender, the group said.

Two thoughts:

1: This is why I prefer console games. I just want to have fun without fighting with the machine.

2: There are plenty of people who appreciate old techniques and methods; and keep them alive. Think of going to a museum and seeing someone demonstrate an old craft or reenact how a craftsman did their job. For example, in my town there is an old, water-powered corn mill that still runs and sells corn meal.

Because a lot of electric grids are too old to handle the increased load.

To translate: When it's hot, air conditioners use more electricity. This is because they use more electricity because they have to work harder to keep a cool temperature.

The reason why electric grids are too old to handle the load is because:

Electric grids were built for smaller populations with the assumption that we'll build more as we make more babies; AND; electric grids weren't built to handle the temperature rise from climate change.

It was designed for historical, pre-climate-change weather. (Or at least when those were in the know about climate change thought we'd solve it.)

I've been using MacOS for 20 years and I haven't encountered it. I rarely reboot.

Do you have some unusual hardware that requires a driver, or otherwise install something that requires a driver?

Every time I see criticism of MacOS Tahoe, it just makes me suspect that someone without experience went on an ego trip.

That being said, should I skip Tahoe and wait for whatever comes next? MacOS keeps nagging me to upgrade to Tahoe, but I've been holding off because HN hates it so much.

Sometimes I shut down my computer at the end of the day to symbolically end my week.

That being said, I hibernate at the end of my day. For some reason, merely closing my Dell laptop just isn't as smooth on reopen as my Mac. The startup is almost as long as a full reboot.

It's interesting to see a European perspective on this incident. They seem a lot more intent on avoiding political agendas than Americans are.

Usually incidents like this (in the US) come from activists who are very bad at "picking their battles wisely." In this case, I don't think a battle was picked going in, as there was an assumption of a fair dialog, and the way the police acted implies that they (police) were hoodwinked into doing something they normally wouldn't do.

A bigger question is, what is the expected outcome from this reporting? Is it that Brussels shouldn't welcome events like this? Is it that the US needs to elect different leaders?

> Obviously there should be limits but what should they be?

A warrant made by a neutral court; that is specifically narrow enough to only target people who could be reasonable suspects.

I'm having trouble understanding what the court did rule on, because IMO this is a totally reasonable use of data. It was very limited in scope, both in time and location.
