Most people assume that it's horrible up here but to give you a "sort of" average idea for the whole country, you are looking at a range between a hot month of 30C and a cold month of -30C if you're only going as north as Ottawa. Winter is three months like anywhere else but it tends to begin in November and end in March (get it? ha-ha)
There are local sub climates like anywhere else of course, so if you're living on the far east coast, or next to the west coast mountains, you'll get worse and better climate, respectively.
Peanuts and hot sauce/peppers? I realize that's not all Thai food, but a lot of people start with a dish containing those things. Like when someone says Korean food doesn't agree with them, having only tried the gimchi.
I bet pregnant women would like a version of this which supported their body weight sporadically throughout the day, especially in the late third trimester.
Hell, I want one to help me do the dishes. There's somewhere a stool wouldn't make much sense.
I'm simply glad you turned your thinking around. I've applied at startups and other companies that seem disappointed I can't immediately point out for which team or project I'd like to work for. My friend referred me in and assures me the work is interesting. I am here because I trust their judgement.
To me, the job interview is a mutual interview, i.e., I am interviewing the employer while they interview me. And when it comes to deciding on teams/projects, I use the probationary period as if it were an extra due diligence after the interview to decide if the work is interesting (much as the employer gets the time to decide if I really am a good fit and productive).
I think many people have been sold by founders and interviewers on the greatness of a set of projects only to find the scope or robustness of those projects to be much less.
Agreed. I think this should have been anonymized outside of Buffer.
There are so many possibly repercussions with family, friends, and outsiders, in addition to the things brought up by other posters re: poaching, etc.
I personally wouldn't want my salary revealed publicly because my family would treat me differently as a result (I know this from experience).
If this idea spreads, it wouldn't be long before someone comes up with a way to API this data into something like LinkedIN or Monster. "Joe makes $100k at CompanyX - is it time for a change?"
Internally to the business though, this seems to have a lot of positives. I'll be interested to see how this evolves at Buffer.
Personally have no interest in the product (not a smoker), but I am curious about a few things:
1. how long does a refill last? how do you quantify it? in # of normal cigarettes? minutes?
2. time between battery charges?
3. does the second-hand vapour smell similar to the flavour names?
Also, there's some kind of disconnect between your "how it all started", the name of your product, your front-page advertising (ok, the pretty girls), and the scary bottom-of-page warnings. I think you need to make your messaging a little bit more congruent.
"These findings could have implications for formula, which could be tweaked to optimize development for both boys and girls."
As the father of a little girl, I find this sentence more ominous than was probably intended. The formula aisle is already overly complex with Regular, Iron Enriched, Omega Enriched, Soy, Low-Lactose, and No Lactose, among the many yogurt sounding ones (pre/macro/post/whatever-biotic).
However, I am worried (perhaps due to cynicism) that instead of rationally simplifying this system, it might be dumbed down to Boy and Girl formula. Though I guess there may be benefits as well. sigh - glad I'll probably be done having kids by then :D
Agreed. Not only more R&D in Ottawa but the fact that a a tech company's HQ is here is a positive. So many tech in Ottawa for R&D, but with their leadership silo'd in Toronto or another hub. Kudos to Shopify on this.
While I agree that some better hinting is necessary, there is an About link at the top and it's not that hard to get some details about this project through it.
It's pretty intuitive except when you type a name that is very unpopular as a registered first name with social security (which is where the data comes from according to the blog posts behind the About link)
I thought the same thing about "rich people" - I guess he meant rich as in "rich dataset"
I like this a lot. My wife and I have been having fun coming up with names for the past 15 minutes.
It does need a bit of polishing but not to the degree some commenters here are suggesting. You have an explanation linked through "About" to a blog post. Some of that detail should probably be on the graph, e.g., explaining what clicking on the legend does.
It's interesting how often people talk about looking for the scrolling hint. Until (sort-of-)recently, the presence of the _scroll bar_ was the hint, and it worked well for the multiple decades it had been in use.
I had mostly gotten used to the new super scrolly pages, but this site breaks it by looking like a one-screen site with a footer and sidebar.
Can someone explain to me why BlackBerry gets so much negativity for trying to regain relevance, whereas there's much more positive thoughts for startups trying to pivot to do the same? It always seems like HN has a lot more love for the latter than the former.
