Some of the comments here are very disturbing. Right or wrong , customer or proprietor - you just dont talk to people that way.. especially so if you are a business.
It doesnt matter if you are only making $One Dollar from a customer -- a company or individual should not engage in open and public shit flinging.
What makes this grotesque is the way the company taunted the customer. What is really shocking are some of the responses and the notion that since the customer didnt pay or had a problem that the company was entitled and near obliged to dish out such treatment.
Though, one can argue that being YC had more to do with it than just "skill". Maybe they are going to be great leaders within Google.. or maybe they'll just be yet another acqHired then leave as soon as possible..
Point is that -- if they are just a normal 'startup' -- they probably would not have been acquired if they didnt carry the YC brand perception with them
Im curious, --- SO does this mean the startups were a success? Is "acquired-to-be-hired" mean everything worked out? It seems like all of the energy exerted in these startups really didnt amount to much (great guys btw--> Frid.ge and JustScooped). except for getting hired.
Im a little mad.. because.. products back by YC such as Fridge and JustSpotted have asked us as consumers to believe in their efforts and adopt their products early..
NOW, it appears that these companies just seem like a way to get hired and acquired..
-- You ("the startup") asked us to believe in you and adopt your product and approach -- only to be left with a defunct product
Seems like: "If the going gets tough, --> you sell out" (Literally)
Im not hating.. Im proud that another YC company is moving on to better things.. . but -- seems like a slight break in the trust placed on startups..
how can consumers adopt early if theres a seemingly greater reality that the startup is actually "built to be hired/acquired" /.
Im very surprised by the reactions overall (over here on HN) I wonder IF these shenanigans were done by a NON YC funded company - if it would be responded to with more critical cynicism.
I suspect this will break alot of blogs because wordpress got a lot of users very use to the update button starting from 2.8 with their frequent update releases. There's a lot of webhost that's barely on php5 -- plus there's alot of VPS users that don't really manage their VPS and keep their php properly update.
Wow! I wonder if Amazon would ever get hit like this? How can a hosting company protect itself from being effectively shutdown? theres a PRODUCT in this debacle somewhere! Hat tip to Pinboard for doing a great job dealing with this crisis!
In February 18, 2011 HN'ers believe there's a bubble http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2231352Yes, we're in a bubble (628 points) No, we're not in a bubble (246 points) [PG: refutes bubble]
The bubble doesn't need to Pop for the bubble to exist. Seems like some people will only concede its a bubble until it blows up. Its very similar convos during real-estate bubble. One thing is for sure; theres money to be made now; rather than later.
