The trends for HS and Dropout are also negative. To me it implies education across the board is getting worse (assuming IQ is a good measure of “good” education).

> But most people aren't YouTubers. In my experience, people who aren't into tech usually have no idea their upload speeds are any slower than their download speeds, much less 25 times slower.

People who aren’t into tech aren’t trying to fine tune Llama2 and then upload it to a cloud machine

That’s interesting. I thought maybe it’s a resource constraint issue, where companies prioritise investment in other areas and do the minimum to “get certified” but it sounds like finding a good provider can be extremely difficult.

What a shame, HackerNews typically has more insightful comments than garbage like this.

Edit: thanks to everyone who wrote some insightful responses, and there are indeed many. Faith in HackerNews restored !

From my understanding as a non security expert:

Pentest comes across more as checking all the common attack vectors don’t exist.

Getting out of bed to do the so-called “real stuff” is typically called a bug bounty program or security researching.

Both exist and I don’t see why most companies couldn’t start a bug bounty program if they really cared a lot about the “real stuff”

The true failure is government. Mozilla shouldn’t have to lead this. The prosecutor should be the regulator.

No, because he is not telling you.. but he might tell someone he knows or cares about ?

Or his descendants might find a reference to it or figure out it was him ?

Bringing up lack of access to sanitation hardly matters in this context.

Almost everything can be deemed as not worth doing because we need to fix sanitation first.

The author of the post is probably implicitly trying to say ‘everyone [who can] should’.

The person who posted about sanitation and taking “everyone” to mean literally everyone in the world, is being overly pedantic in my opinion.

Less than 50% doesn’t qualify as most if the statement is about something binary and mutually exclusive.

If more than or equal to 46% qualifies as most, then both the statements would be correct:

(1) Most people don’t have access to sanitation.

(2) Most people do have access to sanitation.

That wouldn’t make logical sense.

On the subject of paying twice, it’s always irked me that we have income tax and then sales tax on the taxed income.

> You seem to miss how the system works…

Yea, the way it works with hedge funds is, do whatever it takes to make a profit, underlying company be damned - see naked shorting GME.

Where is the “financing” in that?

What about all the companies that “got to where they are now” aka dissolved because shorting to oblivion would generate a profit ?

The fact you are scraping the bottom of the barrel and claiming that just buying stock = increasing demand = creating value should be a red flag.

“No, you trade your data”

How exactly does that happen in offline mode ?

You’ve missed the point…

An entity that puts nothing into the host system, but consumes resources from the host to fatten itself is a parasite.

In the case of hedge funds, it’s a zero-sum game. Either you or the counter party lose depending on how the bet goes. In aggregate, society gets nothing, but the cost of the net zero value is high (highly skilled people, taking resources away from other things). It’s profitable but net useless.

In the case of Google Maps, no one has to lose for me to make a journey. It’s profitable and useful.

Saying, ohh but they both operate in a capitalistic system to make money for shareholders is not relevant.

How is that money generated ?

This is a common argument I hear, it just doesn’t hold water.

We should absolutely hold Big Tech accountable for their business models and actions.

On the whole though, they have released many orders of magnitude more useful things than Hedge Funds.

Is there a Citadel Maps I can use ? Or a TwoSigma framework like React ?

At least Big Tech has ad-powered useful services.

Hedge funds gobble up PhD holders and the cream of the crop and use them to make 0.1% of the population 5% wealthier ?

Hedge funds are parasites, they are an edge case in capitalism that needs to be patched.

I can’t think of anything else that takes so much, while adding nothing to society.

> Companies could do their job

This is quite a naive view of how the world works.

Their actual “job” is to make the most amount of money possible.

A realistic option has to be one that is both technically superior and something a company is incentivised to do.

My guess is that it’s in response to the EU bill that will force them to allow other app stores on iOS, and they don’t want to lose developers.

There is no way they would improve out of the goodness of their heart. That kind of behaviour is worthless under capitalism.

You’re sad that free software didn’t make money ?
