The process at my company (< 20 people) is like this:

1. Phone screen with tech lead / manager. 2. Take home 2-3 hour code challenge where you have to build something. No leet code questions - it’s a challenge relevant to what we do. 3. Interview with 2 or 3 engineers / product managers to go over your code and meet the team.

Our offer is usually one where we provide 3 or 4 options (less stock, bigger salary or more stock and smaller salary).

We’re looking for good communicators, quick learners, and passionate engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset. Simply put, we’re looking for people we want to work with everyday (especially when it’s crunch time).

I’ve only worked at startups. I love it and I have no desire to work for big tech. My job security comes what I do and what I can build, not from the company I work for.

All the time. We use Optimizely which allows us to roll features out to subsets of users and run experiments.

It also allows us to keep PRs smaller and roll stuff out to prod confidently.

All I’m saying is I switched my default search on my phone and browser to ddg (just to try it out) and the results have been good enough to not make me switch back to google.

I recently stopped using google and switched my default to DuckDuckGo. So far I haven't needed to go back to google for anything.

Using rails 7 at work and we’re building new features with Hotwire and sprinkles of stimulusjs. So far so good. Happy and productive as promised.

I’d bet against this. Ruby has a great community and Rails 7 is looking amazing. Dynamic typing is very much alive and well.

It's totally worth it imo.

The performance degradation for 99% of web app use cases is negligible compared to the productivity increases. My team switched from a node/react environment to a full stack rails monolith with stimulusjs and we're shipping faster with less bugs.

What do you consider "too much magic"?

I like creating a service/coordination layer between controllers and models to put the business logic. Controllers call the services or coordinators which can interact with models, kick off jobs, or call other services. Easy to test and change and keeps controller and model code more manageable. For smaller apps you can get away with shoving all your business logic in the models but that can become a little tough to manage as the logic becomes more complex.

People who say rails is dead or obsolete have no idea what they are talking about. Rails is better than ever, the core community has stayed strong even while everyone hopped on the javascript hell bandwagon. Enjoy your life, learn Rails.

Rails just keeps getting better and better. It’s an exciting time to be a Rails dev.

+1 Stimulus. My team has been using it in a Rails app and it’s a joy to work with. We threw out our React front end and don’t miss it at all.

A very talented junior engineer joined our team. He puts a lot of pressure on himself and gets very bummed out when something he does isn’t perfect. He tries to do a million things at once and is at risk of burning out. I’m trying to help him manage his work, learn to take pr comments professionally (not personally), and help him have a healthy work/life balance.

I like keeping in touch with former colleagues and friends and giving them a thumbs up when they share something they are proud of.

I’m grateful to have some sense of job security from the weekly recruiter messages I get.

The fake enthusiasm was a big feature at my last company and it got us nowhere. It’s a red flag for me and as an manager, I’d be very skeptical of a candidate who spent too much time trying to be an influencer on LinkedIn.

Listening to music.

Back in the day I listened to the radio, I bought cds and vinyl and listened to entire albums and looked at every detail of the album art. I went record shopping with my brothers. I made mixtapes for special people in my life and received them as well. I’d listen to the radio hoping for a song to come on so I could record it to a cassette on my boombox. I miss the sound of tape. I miss the imperfection.

With everything at my fingertips, I definitely get music A.D.D and skip things often. I don’t care about bands or artists as much. I don’t listen to albums like I used to. I’ve outsourced my music discovery to Spotify playlists and while it’s convenient and sometimes spot on, I sometimes miss the old days of going on a date to the record store and finding something special.
