Assuming we eek thru a whirlwind of catastrophic dangers, one day we will look at this period of time with the same reaction as if we had been sprinkling lead on our cereal.

It's bad on social media, especially Tik Tok. I don't use it often, but when I do I bet I get 3 Kalshi ads every 10 minutes easy.

Yeah I saw that, looks like this is a new laptop class, perhaps an AI-infused evolution of the Chromebook Plus spec: https://www.google.com/chromebook/chromebookplus/

I thought that too, but it looks like this isn't a laptop but a new laptop class, and Lenovo, Dell and HP will all be producing Googlebooks. This does not appear to be a first-party laptop product.

I wanted to like the Pixelbook, but it had a lot of limitations, ChromeOS being the major one. I recall that people were able to run Linux on them, but no idea what that experience was like.

Not sure if it matters that they compete with Apple blow-for-blow, it's probably just the threat of existential risk if they don't own any platform. They want to make sure they don't get Facebook'd by Apple if/when they decide to go fully vertical on AI.

If it's an offsite backup, you would deal with it like you would any DR site-- either plan for yet another backup, or presume that it's unlikely that both the primary and replica would go down simultaneously and accept the risk.

We had a great candidate for a job decline to relocate to the US for precisely this reason. I really do not blame anyone for making that decision

Are you being cheeky or do you really drag a monitor outside?

I don't have the data to demonstrate that this is incorrect, and that's because we lack a fundamental model of how brains operate. Brains probably compute under an expansive definition of computer, but to say it's a classical computer is sorely underdetermined by the evidence.

I disagree a bit. Coding can remain an artistic passion for you indefinitely, it's just your ability to demand that everyone crafts each line of code artisinally won't be subsidized by your employer for much longer. There will probably always be a heavily diminished demand for handcrafted code.

Interesting article! I think I get what the concern is, but I think your view of human cognition is going to heavily color what you think the limitations of an LLM are. For example, if you think that broadly speaking, the human learning process (concept acquisition, inference and concept revision, etc) is modeled by modern LLM training, these limitations might apply to humans in the same sense they do to LLMs.

Systematicity is a really powerful concept that can drive a wedge between classical cognition folks and connectionists/associationists, but it has never been clear to me that we actually instantiate systematic cognitive patterns, only that in some arenas we should.

why does it have to connect to prod in order to be useful?

I can't really imagine any statement they could give that would ease concerns that at some point in time they change their mind. But for now, it is a relief to read, even if this is a bit of marketing. The longer it goes without being enshittified the better.

Do they still use a paddle trackpad? Framework seems like its nearly perfect for me, even if I would miss Apple's displays on the MBP.
