For whatever reason idsoft has not been licensing their engine for a long while. AFAICT it's not that "nobody's buying", it's that "they're not selling".

Release a single player game day 1 on freaking gamepass, and then wonder why the sales numbers aren't happening. Galaxy brains over at MS are something special.
Yeah, cool, but right now they're axing idsoft, which was anything but "artistic vision over fun gameplay". What they did also pretty much kills idtech as a viable engine.

It used to be that consoles were generally the cheaper alternative to a gaming PC, which was subsidized by the price of games, which in turn stimulated the second hand market as people tried to recoup their investment in games, not the system itself.
But now that it's no longer really true, and system prices keep going up for little in return, it's really the worst of all worlds: expensive systems, expensive games, no way to resell, and two of the big three are acting increasingly worse (the jury's still out on what will Nintendo do next, but their ridiculed key-on-a-card system at least allows for reselling).
And this is on top of Sony outright lying about the reality as various leaks and scraps of that indicate that physical sold very well, better than digital.
Even not touching the laughable sample size for both studies - almost halved sample size between 2025 and 2026? Sounds like a massive selection bias, and not in the way they're implying.
Running old software. Like, late 90s to early 00s. Most of the time I can get them to work reasonably well under Win10, but wine keeps failing (and don't get me started on proton).
Plus, godawful midi support cripples many dosbox experiences.
Linux hasn't reached the point where it can be the main driver, not for my usecases. Everything works until very suddenly it doesn't and there's no budging.
That's entirely orthogonal to the fact that Americans thend to label literally anything and everything they don't like as communist. Especially any sort of social(ist) policy good for the people and bad for the 1%.
Back in the day it would be great, but in current day, what could I possibly run on my 020 system that would make Linux preferable over the system's original OS and its dedicated (possibly FOSS) software?
