I always assume these types of stories are red herrings and intelligence agencies already have back doors or decryption methods that they want to keep hush. Make a big song and dance about how encryption is secure and push criminals towards it, meanwhile its a trap. Look at all the Tor takedowns as evidence. It's all fine by me really.
I probably work about 10 hours per week, offsetting that by basically being available 24-7 if needed. Luckily, that's very rare. I guarantee my workload and quality of work excels my coworkers who are in the office 40+ hours a week. The 40 hour work week is totally ineffective for most industries but, alas, America would never move away from it.

TrueCrypt, like most other encryption software, has a back door. I'm fine with that. I encrypt to keep my data safe from stolen hardware not government or law enforcement. Obviously I have no proof but I've always believed that TrueCrypt, along with TOR, was developed by a US government agency to create a false sense of security in targets.

It's perfectly plausible that we're reaching a saturation point and society will start shying away from over-sharing online. A return to offline cash purchasing and face-to-face conversations would be a positive change in my eyes.

Quite frankly, if a persons workflow doesn't include a potential for downtime then they only have themselves to blame. This whole 'down to the wire' and 'stop the press' mentality is a combination of drama-grade fallacy and unprofessional project management skills.
I wasn't a fan if CC at first but it's turned into an incredibly good deal for me at $30 per month. A little downtime from time to time can't be avoided. People just love to complain.
One thing that it's difficult for foreigners to acknowledge is that Japan is so completely different to the western world that it's almost impossible to comprehend. Articles like this, and the musings of western visitors/workers, read more to me as people misinterpreting their surroundings and misunderstanding Japanese culture. I'm convinced that a lot of Japanese have difficulty understanding the current state of their own culture too. The best way I can describe it is that western culture (capitalism/consumerism/democracy) does not mix well with traditional Japanese culture and has resulted in a bizarre chaos. My first-hand experience has shown me that a lot of Japanese prefer the traditional culture to what they currently have and I do not blame them one bit.
