> hold you arrested for breath has been a revelation of the kind watching fable 5 build cannot bring

biology has it's tricks to keep us hooked into: basic things... why do you think heterosexuality is so common? having children as far neuroscience observed, makes you wired by hormonal changes for around 1-2 years! i don't think it's fair to compare to societal (thousands if not billions of humans effort) improvements, think like if we managed to eradicate poverty. that's nice. probably not a groundbreaking event for most HN. i probably was/will be more flooded of chemistry when my high-school crush held my hand to play Just Dance. doesn't remove the general impact and importance

once i think i heard in Darwin's podcast [0] a phrase like: everything that you learn till your mid 30s, it's a skill you can/may make a living of. and i guess that's pretty much it. being tied to something specially when you have your brain cooping is quite a tattoo. doesn't matter if having children is the biggest offender on climate impact (much more than having no cars, going vegan or not traveling by plane (all together)) [1]

i barely see kites on my neighbor nowadays but when i was a teen, we had a group that never fought with each other and our signature against other kites nearby was (translated directly) to shout "fall out thrash!" when we cut/captured them. some got pretty mad at us. we had various techniques like bringing their kite closer to the ground and then someone throwing a line with a stone at the end over their line, so we could capture it etc. if i'm not mistaken we even slingshot some kites as a way of disabling. my record was to stay up after 8 won battles. that day i felt heroic hahaha

i built my own camera out of a Zero 2W [0] and by disabling Picam2 and letting the OS (Debian Bullseye) idle, i can get 2 days of shots and some videos while i walk around the city/hiking out of 3 18650 batteries... bringing 3 spare batteries in my backpack never put me needing battery in any situation! starting Picam2 takes a fraction of a second

do you know fans or people who don't like to tinker computers?

take a sip at GamingOnLinux community... they don't seem to care about stuff running perfectly on Proton and not natively or that Gabe is buying another 600 million USD yatch. they love the Steam ecosystem more than developers crafting games and abiding to 30% of fees that are a clear sign of monopoly power

> People are rightfully risk averse nowadays. Fuck the species if it just wants to bully its young into breeding.

i don't think birth rate is just because of money. never in history people had access or liberation on going childless like now [0]

do you mean like half of the worldwide population [0]? or anything on top of that like remote villages anywhere in the world that aren't liberal like hippies but are very much tied to pastoral ways of living? heck if back in 1600 we didn't killed dozens of millions of people maybe this type of communities would be much more widespread

> Not all synthetics are dangerous, many are. Many are banned, with the list growing each year: https://www.npic.orst.edu/reg/restricted.html

as many synthetic are developed... last time i was making an inventory of an exclusive corn and soybean high tech farm (selling on the hundreds millions USD) there was at least 45 different pesticides... some were distributed in a quantity of 10 mililiters! per hectare with machine with proper air filter at the cabine of the tractor never seen by the organic movement, which by the way, considering their ~ 30% increase in land, fertilizers and pesticides needs and their production totalling less than 2% of all the global food, feels quite a stretch to read author's conclusion of your last study...

your 2° cited study shows improvement on soil quality by variety/rotation, what it has to do with GMO technology? one literally can plant varied stuff while using synthetic pesticides... take a look on most health studies done in organics and health not controlling for life style factors, nor any major study even found dangerous levels of pesticides in food. don't get me wrong, there are niche cases were organic crops just make sense but when you start dismissing GMO technology for a 8 billion and growing world, which in decades will move out of the rural ambient (rural flight is an on going thing, literally no one wants to work in farms, much less in organic ones were the workload is much bigger, if not borderline on slavery (trust me, i did some WWOOF)), feels pure ignorancy out of greenwashing or small studies compared to what we rolled on science the past 30 years of GMO technology

care to cite any decent research proving you point?

there's an extensive body of research on synthetics having no effect on human health, from goverment funded, private and independent research... if you access your country's official institution you'll see there's plenty of synthetics allowed in organic agriculture just because they mimic perfectly "organic" substances

interesting point too, is the lack of any extensive meta-analysis/studies on organic pesticide impact on health and plus the fact organic farm is rather poor (produce less than 2% of the global food) and usually if not always lack good machinery to spread pesticides on the recommended quantities science points out (which organic agriculture also has less literature on that too)

how scary is the decay of cognition? i'm 29 and i already noticed the amount of energy i had on my early 20s on everything, stamina to read, watch movies, exercise, recover from the exercise etc. compared to what i have now. guess it's a slow downhill till i mature to old age but still. shit. i hate the linear time

you don't need to liberate your project to GPL or whatever OSS to let users distribute them via torrent or at least being able to backup the DRM-free installer... i bet most if not all AAA games have their crack into the pirate land in less than a week after or even before release

there's much more than triple A video-games running at 240 Hz on Ultra settings... a 200 USD laptop/computer has enough power to run hundreds of interesting indie games and AAA from the past

even worse! you can start a Emacs client evaluate (menu-bar-mode -1) and (tool-bar-mode -1) and put it on full screen
