Our engineering teams release code every day to millions of people, so we're looking for people who can embrace challenges, build new features, and iterate quickly. Our projects are big - many terabytes of data and millions of users around the world - but our team is small, so you’ll see projects from start to finish and work closely with product managers and designers to ensure successful results.
Contrary to what many people think, few of us have managers who can consistently and successfully lay out the optimal career path and help us achieve it. I'd say there are three main reasons:
1. It's really hard to do.
2. Few people have themselves been trained on management.
3. Faced with 1 and 2, people focus on their own, more familiar personal deliverables.
What you're finding is that working as both a full-time manager and full-time engineer is very difficult, borderline impossible. Eventually, you'll have to choose. An increasing number of small companies are starting to understand this reality, and allow their top people to grow into either technical leadership or management leadership roles. Expecting both, simultaneously, is not realistic.

Like any other set of knowledge, the real skill lies on knowing when and how to apply it. When asked to describe our process, I summarize it as "minimalist Scrum." To us, that means using some aspects of Scrum (small team sizes, prioritized work backlogs, and daily standups) and ignoring others (anything with the word "sprint" in it, pre-planned release cycles, and velocity estimation/tracking). Our culture is more built around continuous deployment.
We've found the process that works well for us, and I encourage everyone to be thoughtful and consider many approaches as they try to do the same.
I love seeing quantitative attempts to study social dynamics, even if it's tricky to extrapolate them to other environments. There definitely seems to be a growing research consensus that people with emotional intelligence--sensitive to others, good at team-building--are more important than previously thought, especially relative to, say, technical skill.
One thing I'm very curious about, with respect to this study's findings, is the relationship with similarly-convincing research about the important of private offices and minimizing distractions. The two aren't totally exclusive, of course, but there is at least some tension:
For example, we now know that 35% of the variation in a team’s performance can be accounted for simply by the number of face-to-face exchanges among team members. We know as well that the “right” number of exchanges in a team is as many as dozens per working hour, but that going beyond that ideal number decreases performance.
That style of interaction does sound a lot easier to facilitate in an open-plan office.

I was surprised I didn't see mention of the reason I buy so many books electronically: Impatience. Getting the book now versus waiting a couple days is a big benefit for me.
Course Hero created and now leads a new market for crowd-sourced supplementary educational materials. We're committed to making learning more open and accessible, and have built a variety of products to that end, including study documents, flashcards, tutoring help, and more.
Our company culture is open, transparent, and dedicated to building consensus on important decisions. We succeed together. Also, we've been profitable for over four years, enabling us to make decisions for long-term success.
Our stack is PHP with Symfony2, AngularJS + JQuery, MySQL, and some cloud services on the back end.
We're growing fast, and looking to fill a number of positions:
My experience at Startup School was a true epiphany, though not in the way most people would expect.
After hearing founder stories directly from people like Brian Chesky and Andrew Mason, and hearing what they tried and went through in the years before anyone heard of their "overnight" success, I finally understood that I'm truly not like them. Selling cereal to keep things running on a shoestring budget? I would have given up by then, as would have many rational people.
The experience helped me appreciate that the role I love, and have thrived in ever since, is in a small startup (but post-money) where the challenges are growth, innovation, and building a strong foundation for the future, both in terms of technology and people.
I think it's wise to consider a startup job independent of any possible financial windfall. Even if there's no exit, will you be glad to have worked there? Will you develop skills and be exposed to opportunities that you're looking for?
In some ways, this suggests startups are a better choice for people who have worked long enough to know what they're trying to accomplish at the next stage of their career. (I don't doubt that some college grads know this already.)
