Growth in wages is meaningless if inflation consumes it.

My opinion is that inflation is generally a bad idea but the thing that really matters is inflation volatility. The market will adjust for whatever the inflation rate is (unless its extreme) but volatility just results in loss.

Every online service is compelled by law to answer subpoenas. You're supposed to assume the collaborate with the state.

The enforcement penalty of the constitution is the state's ability to rescind delegated powers from the federal government. No one seems to think it's bad enough to be worth having a real conversation about that.

I'm sorry what was that? You want rules after all?

Also features that people assume are part of the OS, like push notifications, but are really a service run by Apple that your phone is locked to using cryptography don't work with self-signed apps.

She was another software engineer and needed VMs too so I thought I'd just let her use some of my spare compute.

I used to say "oh yeah just run qemu-kvm" until my girlfriend moved in with me and I realized you do legitimately need some kind of infrastructure for managing your "internal cloud" if anyone involved isn't 100% on the same page and then that starts to be its own thing you really do have to manage.

Suddenly I learned why my employer was willing to spend so much on OpenStack and Active directory.

Language matters. I actually really like what Stallman does. You need this kind of thing to counteract repeated exposure to marketing material. It's similar to the Dave Ramsey situation IMO. Dave Ramsey's advice is objectively bad but you need something to be repeated as an alternative to the credit ads people hear multiple times a day.

These simple repeated ideas slowly absorb into people's subconscious.

America? the Anglosphere? the improvements to India? The almost complete eradication of slavery? The web? The British Empire arguably has a greater legacy than the Roman Empire.

The people who fall for these scams will just get tricked into buying giftcards anyway. There's nothing you can do for them if you don't want to institutionalize them, stop bothering the rest of us.

It looks to me like we hit the end of the debt cycle. The market was predicting this by the end of the fall last year before Trump was even elected.

I don't think not doing tariffs would have had much of an effect.

Microkernels are normally pretty slow. It takes a lot of extra effort to make them fast.

Realistically there's no reason Linux wouldn't be fine on its own for AR and in fact I'm typing this on Linux on some AR glasses right now.

If you're the kind of person who thinks this way chances are your website is unpleasant enough that I'd do without your content entirely if the AI summary wasn't available.

Yes although mostly over VOIP. Voice calls aren't actually very complex though of you prefer using those directly.

Substack seems to have done an incredible job allowing people to monetize their blogs. Maybe Substack themselves aren't profitable but the authors certainly seem to be doing well.

As someone who's subscribed to a lot of substacks the thing that brought me there was the availability of asynchronous reading (mail, rss newsletters.) I'm sure I'm not alone in disliking the actual site itself.

We're not "too important." All a union would do is create extra problems for us.

There are two possibilities:

a) This is a large scale administrative coordination problem

b) We don't need as many software engineers.

Under (a) unionizing just adds more administrators and exacerbates the problem, under (b) unions are ineffective and just shaft new grads or if they manage to be effective, kills your employer (and then no one has a job.)

You can't just administrate away reality. The reason SWEs don't have unions is because most of us (unlike blue collar labor) are intelligent enough to understand this. I think additionally there was something to be said about factory work where the workers really were fungible and it was capital intensive, software development is almost the polar opposite where there's no capital and the value is the theory the programmers have in their head making them a lot less fungible.

Finally we do have legal tools like the GPL which do actually give us a lot of negotiating power. If you work on GPL software you can actually just tell your employer "behave or we'll take our ball and leave" if they do something stupid.

Desktop Linux works very nicely on smartphones actually provided all the drivers are there. I lived with a PinePhone running FVWM on Xorg for a couple years and if the hardware didn't crumble away I'd still be using it today.

No need to "build a complete from-scratch alternative OS" when that was already done 30 years ago.

IMO most people should have a VPS even if you don't need it for tunneling. Living without having a place to just leave services/files is very hard and often "free" services will hold your data hostage to manipulate your behavior which is annoying on a good day.
