I also really like Reeder but use miniflux as the backend

The title is terrible. I was also misled.

The people who use patriotism for every reason except actually caring for their fellow citizens.

Some years ago when I still had my 2009 Macbook Pro I noticed that if:

- The laptop was charging

- I was touching the laptop with one hand, and either (my memory is fuzzy on the details by now but it was one of these two circumstances):

- A friend was touching me on the side of the forehead with one hand and touching a crack on the wall with the other hand

OR

- I was the one touching the crack on the wall with my other hand.

Again, I don’t remember which of these last two. BUT I remember the result: I would see banding with my eyes (very similar to what you see with cameras when their shutter doesn’t sync with AC power).

Now, our eyes don’t have shutters so I have no idea what was going on but I saw it.

It’s still a valid strategy and it makes sense in the current economic system.

I use Reeder on iOS connected to a miniflux instance (via a google reader compatible API). Reeder has a feature where it can mark an article you scroll past as read which for me is a must - with most items I have titles are enough and I don’t want to open every single article to mark it as read.

It’s crazy to me that platforms like these don’t have a reasonable spend limit set by default or easily configured.

I understand it can be difficult to stop spending exactly at a certain amount to the cent or event to the dollar or, hey, tens of dollars if traffic is really crazy. But hundreds? Thousands? Tens of thousands? Your system should be able to measure that and stop it in time.

Which they would win because they have the money to get themselves a well equipped army if they need to.

It could. In the same way that when fossil fuel companies found out their business is destroying the planet they could have pivoted into renewables. But they didn’t.

With profit being the deciding factor it’s anyone’s guess what the people who are in charge of these companies will do to avoid bankruptcy.

Something where this immediately has an advantage over Obsidian is not having to pay for the sync feature to have the notes synced between your phone and your laptop.

The solution is to support these people if they are unable to work so that they don’t have to fear for their livelihood if they come down sick.

If the expectation is for people who are sick to further worsen their condition by becoming unemployed and discard themselves then the system is broken - simple as.

That won’t make sense forever. Already barely does. Giving people access to their stuff without DRM is the way.

This and things like inheritance when someone passes away are things that will have to be regulated since we can’t trust these companies to do the right thing.

Allowing people to download what they purchased and allowing account transfers to your kids when you pass away should become legal rights.

I’ve been wearing these in public with prescription lenses and in Germany, of all places. The only person who has mentioned something so far was the guy at the door in the apple store. He recognized them immediately but I could tell he was into tech, so not an average joe and we had a nice chat about the glasses for a bit.

I always make it a point to explain that I’m not recording and that if I was the light would be on. And that if you try to cover it it actually will not allow you to record (which is true).

The “nation” is a fairly new concept and what was there before did have owners.

The future he talks about might be one where workplaces don’t have an owner either.
