Good on you to build a tool to scratch your itch!

As another poster highlighted, hosting other people's content is tricky. Its certainly not a business I would rather be in. I bet the management of this SaaS service is going to quickly take over your day job.

If you are just hosting your own content you can do it pretty cheaply using the AWS Serverless Image Handler stack:

Yeah I'd grab the URL and feed it to curl on the command line to start inspecting the HTTP traffic and start from there.

Great points.

I did have the thought about attending meetups - which is a good approach. My first reaction was just that I dont want people to think I'm leaching off of them - I want to give back (assuming they want what I have to offer).

Its funny because I feel I am quick to help others w/o any thought of retribution - but I dont expect the same from others.

Another solution is wal-e[1] which handles continuous archiving. It was built by the Heroku guys and as such is battle-tested.

I use wal-e myself and its indispensable and easy to use.

I wish I could +1 this a million times. I develop a Ruby gem for the QB API (Online & Desktop)[1] and I've come to realize their whole API is a mess. I've also worked with the Xero API and its much simpler but still lacks some key features like adding a discount to a line item on an invoice.

Did you look at beanstalk? It has both of the features you're looking for: the ability to set a delay and when a job experiences an error it will be placed in the "buried" queue (which is like your Dead Letter Queue)

It has client libraries in most languages and also definitely won't require the use of polling.

This looks great but how does it compare to FullCalendar? [1]

From what I can see there is zero documentation, an area which FullCalendar excels at.

It will be hard to use this plugin without any documentation, certainly in the areas of events, which data sources are supported, etc.

I encountered this very issue a few years ago, basically your queue picking up jobs before the database commits. I solved this by actually queuing up my jobs to a thread-local queue and then firing the whole spool at the end of the request (in an around_filter, so you fire the spool after the yield to the action). This means that you actually fire your jobs after the request has done its whole database commit. This can all be done without having to leak abstractions and make the model layer know about the presence or lack of the fake queue.

By traditional I assume you mean the setup where you have an HTTP server which reverse proxies (either doing it itself) or to HAProxy which in turn proxies to the actual Ruby application server (e.g. Mongrel, Unicorn).

In the above scenario there are just way too many parts.

Having Passenger being an all-in-one solution is pretty great.

I think most people with most apps can be very happy with Passenger.

I have been very pleased with Phusion Passenger and eagerly look forward to 4.0 and the pricing for Enterprise.

I love this method and have almost the exact setup. I do the same for JS too.

In the footer of every page:

    $(document).ready(function() {
      if (V.Views.orders_index) { V.Views.orders_index(); }
    }

Where "V.Views.orders_index" is basically "${controller}_${index}". Thus you just need to actually define that function in an included JS and voila, thats your calling hook and your JS is invoked.

cache-money is probably the most full-featured and battle-tested (coming from Twitter and now taken over by ngmoco).

However its biggest drawback is that its hard-wired to use memcached.

It would be great if the actual cache backend was pluggable and we could develop a redis adapter. As it stands the memcached integration is pretty deeply intertwined into the cache-money library.

Also the MySQL query cache is not very granular, it gets cleared on every write to that table. Thus, we've seen in practice that with it enabled MySQL has poorer performance as its constantly being flushed. The overhead of maintaining it doesnt pay off.

Of course its a trade-off. If you have have substantially more reads than writes than it might be OK for your needs.

In 1998 "The Atlantic" magazine wrote a great article about the relationship of Big Business and Prisons, known as the "Prison-Industrial Complex"[1].

Its a sobering read and really brings home the fact that incarceration is indeed big business and there is a lot of entrenched interests in maintaining the status quo. And large rates of incarceration.

I live in Lower Haight and recently joined our neighborhood block on NextDoor.com [1]

A lot of my neighbors have been posting about recent break-ins. There has been a good number of break-ins recently and people are chiming in with historical stories from the last 2 years.

Overall its nice to be in the loop. I am surprised to hear about so much burglary in Lower Haight.

On Tuesday evening my motorcycle, parked in front of my house, was vandalized. Over the last 2 years I've had to replace my spark plugs 4 times. I come out in the morning and they are either gone or half missing. Apparently you can tie the porcelain part to some wire and swing it against glass and it breaks the glass more efficiently (?). Last year my girlfriends scooter, also parked in front of our house, was vandalized.

There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason. Its messed up.
