Yup. If you're looking for intelligence or logical consistency, you won't find it here.

I removed most of the the autocompletion plugins from my Vim setup. (I had YouCompleteMe set up for intelligent suggestions, I've rolled it back to a simpler LSP-driven setup).

Also, I no longer update plugins without first manually reading the source diff to see if they've been infected by malware.

Boko Haram wouldn't have read any of those books because they banned the reading of any book except the Koran.

Yeah, but terrorists are really dumb. An eye-opening read: https://www.theatlantic.com/international/2026/01/kidnapped-...

I prefer to download the video using yt-dlp and then watch at 2.5x in mpv.

Mostly moved my panels around to emphasize navigating code and looking at diffs side by side. Less emphasis on terminals, task runners, debuggers, test suites, etc. - I can pop those out if I need them, but usually I have the agent run my CI suites as a pre-review step anyway.

This is a real thing, it's why units like Sturmtruppen or special forces units have been successful throughout history - a smaller, better trained and coordinated force is often better than a large, uncoordinated mob. _Especially_ if your force is made up of people willing to do suicide attacks. Or if you goal is not to take and hold territory, but to trade lives for terror and body count.

A wave of 1000 soldiers won't break a trench line, but a squad of infiltrators can sneak in and make entry. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stormtroopers_(Imperial_German...

This is covered in the full PDF; they have many accounts they spread the queries over and structure them like they're asking for help writing a movie script.

I switched from using Vim as my primary editor to using Zed's Vim Mode. When you have a second process editing your project in the background you need an editor that can display those changes immediately without clunky buffer reloads.

I've also customized Zed's UI to optimize for reading and reviewing code, and mostly adding notes or small focused edits, rather than writing entire files from scratch.

HN audience prefers text to video; videos rarely do well here compared to other sites.

I collect watches and even my cheapest old Chinese automatics will lose like 30 seconds per month or so.

I hardly drive anymore since COVID, I'll gain the benefit of being less likely to be killed on my bike and not have to pay a dime :)

My guy a mechanical watch should lose like a minute a _month_, tops. Get your watch serviced.

If your Seiko is losing a minute a day it badly needs a service to adjust the timing.

It's surprisingly easy to learn. I had a coworker who did this as a hobby while working in tech. Rolex hires people right off the street and trains them into professionals within weeks. Even as an amateur I've opened a few of the cheaper watches in my collection for some basic maintenance. When I retire it's one of the hobbies I hope to dive deeper into, it would be nice to be able to do my own oiling on most of my collection.

The main barrier to entry is that you need a lot of tools and supplies, I priced it out and to do a full service on an automatic I probably need $1000+ of tools and supplies.

In practice I had a dislocated wrist once and getting it put back in was the most painful experience of my life.

No need. There are now sensors which can passively detect the presence of alcohol on anyone's breath within the cabin, and sensors which can detect BAC when you put your finger on them.

    if alcohol_detected_in_cabin:
        promptDriverForFingerprint()
The same cameras used to monitor if the driver is falling asleep can also check for cheating.

> When I'm cruising on the highway I like to rest my right wrist on the top of the wheel, which blocks the sensor.

Won't this shatter your wrist if your airbag deploys? I remember being taught to hold the sides of the wheel in driving class.

> I think an in-car breathalyzer which gates the ignition would also save a lot of lives.

> Most people agree that kind of manufactured paternalism is an overreach and would be against its introduction.

Congress already passed a law in 2021 to start the process of requiring alcohol impairment detection in new cars around 2030 - the HALT Drunk Driving Act. It had broad, bipartisan support. I would say "most people agree" does not appear to be the case.

I switched my home server from k3s to quadlet and saw an 8% drop in power usage.
