I’ve been using Hugo for 7 years on multiple static sites. It has been a joy to learn and to use. I struggled with Jekyll previously along a number of the dimensions OP lists - complexity in the tool chain when there are weeks or months between new posts.

As a number of others have mentioned - pin the version of Hugo you use for a particular project. I do this and it works great for stability. Then I upgrade when I have the time or the need or I want to standardize across projects.

This was an informative article with an opinionated take. Don’t update the original based on feedback. It is your article on your blog. You do you.

my understanding is that the major public clouds operate Public Key Infrastructure on end users' behalf. It feels like magic because there are large teams of very smart and capable people making it feel like magic.

Super awesome work. Obligatory plug for https://nomie.app/. Fantastic tracking tool I have no affiliation with.

I would like to push back on the position that if there are no insights gleaned then there is zero value in this work.

There is plenty of value in owning your data and bringing awareness to what companies are storing about you. Further I find tracking my data satisfying and meditative in itself. Digital collecting. Example: https://data.tomhummel.com/sneezes/
