How do you eat an elephant? ... one small bite at a time.
I'm a visual person, so first I map it out -- sections, pages, functions, classes -- whatever is appropriate.
Then after figuring out what needs to happen -- the process of visually laying out everything I can think of (mindmapping tools, paper & crayons, etc)
Try to come up with some type of estimate of how long it will take for each step, smaller the pieces are the better!
(essentially, storypointing like in standard project management situations)
Then, I schedule it into my life: 15mins here, an hour there, a weekend sprint, etc
This really helps to see how long stuff might take, or will take.
Update the estimations and map frequently. I schedule this too - like a weekly check-in with myself for the project(s).
