For Samba, add a separate entry for the user home directory because the homes directory default triggers some sort of OCD.

How vulnerable are road sign cameras to, say, someone sticking a vertical strip of black electrical tape to make the 50 appear as a 150?

Is there any cross-referencing to an onboard GPS database? GPS-based speed alerts are a feature of base-model Hyundais/Kias in Canada, so it doesn’t seem to be too far of a stretch for a failsafe.

> I wouldn't buy a commercial router that wasn't supported by OpenWRT now.

Is there any closed-sourced firmware that exceeds OpenWRT performance on the same level of hardware?

I think that some proprietary firmware may have hardware optimizations that aren’t possible in a community-developed environment.

Have you considered a dynamo hub with a headlight with USB output?

I tried to look up the source article, but there doesn’t seem to be any mention of consumption of edibles versus smoking.

> CarPlay is a fantastic system because it keeps you off your phone.

Tinfoil hat time: CarPlay was created as a 4D regulatory chess move, because it enables users to continue interacting with their phones in a legislative environment where said action is otherwise illegal.

It would be hard to argue that it’s illegal to use the phone in a way that’s nearly identical to the way you interact with your vehicle controls.

There has to be a term for these very specific claims. 30 g in 30 minutes? Give me LD50 numbers.

There was a yew bush on my walk to primary school. When berries were in season, I used to pick and squish the berry between my fingers because the shape was unique (berry with a seed that sticks out‽) ands its slimy feel. Thank goodness it never amounted to anything more, even through transdermal absorption.

> The dumb streetlight across the street doesn't blind me from my bedroom window

I had this issue, and I contacted the power company to re-aim the offending streetlight.

Noise is a design choice and could likely be legislated away. Reject heat is different than heating from greenhouse gas effects that are “heating the planet”.

You just unlocked a memory of the dual-personality PP/SCSI Zip drive that apparently sucked at both.

It’s amazing how much these problems went away when high speed USB came along.

> Like many external drives in the 1980s and 90s, [Bernoulli] used a high-speed connection called SCSI. With SCSI…

I was there when the old magic was written.

What a lot of PC history fails to capture is that SCSI was not ubiquitous. It was a “luxury” feature that you had to seek out for yourself as an add-on PCI card, and off-the-shelf consumer PCs did not come with these installed.

SCSI peripherals came with a premium as well, so committing to SCSI meant consistently shelling out more with each upgrade.

For example, in the mid-1990s, parallel port ZIP drives were the cheapest option for external “large volume” storage. An ATAPI internal or external SCSI ZIP drive had price differences that were significant enough to make you think twice about the value of your purchase.

Edit: As an aside, the parallel port could act as dollar-store SCSI with daisy-chaining. We had the ZIP drive in line with a Pinnacle Studio 400, that terminated on an HP Deskjet 890Cxi (… for Windows) printer. It was a painful line-by-line experience trying to print, while doing a data transfer to/from the ZIP drive.
