Doing a piece on 'fiendishly difficult games' without mention "I wanna be the guy" is like doing a piece on the 'sci-fi horror movies' without mentioning 'Alien'.
There are some EXTREMELY hard bullet hell games out there. The only one I can think of is TouHou, but I know there are much harder ones out there.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (a rogue-like.) You could play this for months and not beat the game.
