Is this like flat earthers, that started off as an elaborate joke, but then some people didn't get the message and took it seriously?
Guess who is hosting such a stupid thing?
Facebook. The stupid stick of the internet.
Facebook. The stupid stick of the internet.
We can blame Facebook for everything but they are not the source of the problem. People were doing stupid things an believing to crazy theories long before Facebook existed. I remember when I was a kid we used to get these chain letters in the mail saying if you don't forward this message to 5 of your friends or relatives you will die in a month... Guess what? Friend sent them to us meaning people believed it. The difference is that now Facebook made it easier to pass these ideas but also the opposite is true for example I follow Facebook groups whose purpose is to debunk fake research.
Facebook amplifies it. Now blunt stupid gets a platform. In the past you could have stood on a corner and yelled things and you would have only reached the people within your voice.
Now you can get online and reach millions with stupid theories. In this case Facebook could/should shut this down. I am sure there are more nuanced areas where it would not be as clear cut.
Cutting the voices of stupid really does help.

If they are confident in their belief, they should be up for The Ebola Challenge. Anyone have the dollars to make it happen? Just need to provide free flights to Congo or Guinea.
