Ask HN: Messed up visas – work a notice period?
Using a throwaway account. I just realized I’m unable to work remotely in the US on my visa without getting EAD first. I’ve been working for 6 months for a company remotely with pay going into a foreign account and taxes paid in my home country. I wish to find work in the US soon so wanted to get my EAD and then realized the mistake. Therefore, I will need to quit my job. My question is should I risk my visa by working a 1 month notice period or risk my reputation by explaining the situation with a 1 day notice period? What would you do?

don't mess with your visa, better give shorter notice. they shouldn't have employed someone without visa in the first place. good luck.
Thank you, think you’re right. I emailed today and will call an immigration lawyer to confirm tomorrow. The issue is it’s a huge gray area with people arguing both sides and I only saw the one when I came over. Lesson learnt :)
