As far as I understand it in retrospect (having grown up in a strictly PC household and later investigating "retro" platforms where SCSI was standard), SCSI was not inherently expensive. It's more that for PC platforms, ATA provided a hack that was cheaper at the time, which led to a bifucation of the market. ATA roughly turned HDDs into a subset of the ISA bus, which in turn originated as a buffered version of the CPU bus. That led to SCSI being at a premium on PC platforms because the target market was limited to customers for whom ATA wasn't good enough (mainly because they wanted more drives or longer cables than the thin translations of ATA could support).

I've never heard of this, and cursory web searches don't seem to be turning up anything relevant (although that's admittedly not saying much with the state of search lately). Can you explain how the law requires this level of data retention?

Java has its technical issues, but for a startup its biggest liability is that its vibe is the polar opposite of how startups want to see themselves and be seen by others. It's reliable, stodgy, boring, conventional. How are you going to convince people that your project is "disruptive" if you aren't willing to embrace a younger, edgier tech stack?

I don't know how serious they were being, but a couple of the developers have suggested over the years that "MAME 1.0" represents MAME perfectly emulating all platforms.

Chip layouts are typically covered by a separate copyright-like regime with different rules (most notably a much shorter period of exclusivity) [1]. I believe the original NMOS 6502 and the derived Nintendo/Ricoh 2A03 both predate these laws, so Ricoh only had to worry about patent infringement.

That being said, many chips also contain code (e.g. firmware, microcode) that is potentially eligible for copyright independently of the chip layout.

It seems like the done thing these days (for people who care about running on real hardware) is to bring up educational/experimental kernels on Raspberry Pi, using the "mini UART" for console I/O and the SD interface for storage.

There's also an infamous (at the time, anyway) shot of her in Other M. Of course, if you're familiar with the story it's obvious that there's nothing like sexual objectification involved. It makes perfect sense that she's on the floor unconscious in the Zero Suit with her ass pointed directly at the camera, because she was just attacked without warning by a man who she's uncharacteristically submissive toward.

Uh, wait. That came out wrong. Can I start over?

Part of the downvotes might be related to the fact that there's been a lot of skepticism/cynicism/backlash around Valve's allegedly flat management structure. Multiple ex-employees have said that while there are no formal "boss" roles, the company has evolved a de facto manager class with whom one must ingratiate themselves to even have a semblance of job security, let alone materially affect the direction of the company.

> If you're not good at it, get good at it. Find someone at the company who is, and watch what they do, get in their orbit, and learn.

How do I get good at being able to tell who's good at it? Because most days it feels to me like there are exactly two levels of social skills:

1) Everyone else, who rehearsed that day's script a dozen times

2) Me, who didn't get the script and has to constantly improvise

The wording is a little ambiguous, but I think the scheme was that the first request is honored and any subsequent requests are ignored, not that additional requests cancel or undo the action altogether.

Superficially, it seems like the performance hit mostly scales with IOPS or transactions per second, which might have some pretty serious implications for performance/dollar in the kinds of intensive back-end applications where Intel currently dominates and AMD is trying to make inroads with EPYC.
