Not dang and not the person you are asking but there is no CDN. HN is just two servers running BSD one active and one standby. HN is all text so there is not much bandwidth usage.

I did an experiment and linked from HN to my lame blog site and disabled all my anti-scraping measures. Even with all the bots I did not see that much traffic. I suspect some people are specifically being targeted by very poorly configured or very poorly written archiving scripts. Just one example thread discussing this with someone on HN [1]. Each case of being targeted will require looking at generalized characteristics but most are easy to stop in my opinion and experience.

I think the planet will do just fine without us but we will likely hit one of many great filters long before we colonize anything outside of Earth. The list of dumb things we do as a civilization are too long to list on HN. I am honestly very surprised we still exist and can still reproduce.

It is responding for me. The IP I get is 198.98.60.34 (FranTech Solutions) is that what you get? Cert expires in 64 days.

Perhaps so. In the case of the United States Agency for International Development I think they brought that on themselves by spending most of their budget on bribing officials and using propagandist warfare against Americans. Too many people know about that now. It was a good run but it may be time for other aid organizations to take their place and receive their budget.

The majority of Ebola deaths are a result of the locals not allowing medical support near the bodies or the infected and also rubbing the bodies of the infected and rubbing themselves are part of some ritual or traditional practice while screaming. There are videos of this dangerous behavior, not posting here as they are far too graphic. Aid groups would not be permitted anywhere near the infected.

If you are interesting in helping people in these situations consider reaching out to rescue.org [1] and let them know. I am not affiliated but have spoken to them in the past. They are great and truly unique people.

I think it would require people create some naughty limericks, make foul jokes, rule34, rekt and ethnic slurs. Those seem to be the only things that mainstream AI have been tuned to avoid. There's probably a way to jailbreak that for a little bit but it would get patched.

One thing I have yet to see on the mainstream AI platforms is a combination of foul language, dirty jokes, rule34 and racial slurs. 4chan-GPT and local LLM's excluded. Perhaps require Rule34 and foul language as proof. There's probably a way to jailbreak that for a little bit but it would get patched.

Adding to this there is pidgin-otr and python-potr.

For IRC there is irssi-otr. There was weechat-otr but I think it may have gone unsupported as their script did not work in python3.

There is also ejabberd [0] that has OMEMO [1] preferred over OTR and PGP and supports many to many E2EE.

Someone tried to MitM Jabber, discussion here on HN [2].

Who is running the abusive scrapers?

Don't know, I just block them. These [1] are some of the methods I use with exception to method 7. I need to make time to try out the SSL fingerprint detection. They are crude methods but most of the bots / scrapers are kicked to the curb. The feds shutting down NetNut helped a lot too. I am looking forward to them shutting down more residential proxies.

True, though they front-end 4chan which have drawn/AI kiddo material which is a no-no in the US of A which makes it difficult for me to use as my primary news site and for obtaining medical advice.
Bender

That makes sense. In that case I have to assume that Cloudflare will not permit encrypted archive files as one can hide the image fingerprints all together.

and that you'd be considered a creep and probably questioned by the police if found with one of those, while we're on a path to be forced to accept people with smart glasses

Possibly so. I get some looks with this one being in a conservative rural area. [1] Thankfully not everyone gets it.

Hypothetically speaking I could envision activists printing out posters and stickers saying things to the effect of, "Smart glasses may be undressing and tracking your children." though I have no idea if such stickers and posters would get taken down or if that may lead to injuries. There could be t-shirt with a catchy logo that says something similar.

There have been spy-tech gadgets around for ages that can hide cameras in plain sight such as mini cameras that can be fitted inside a hat that looks like a decal. Mini cameras that look like a broach or shirt button. I think the difference is such gadgets have never been mainstream or popularized by a big tech platforms nor designed to integrate with cell phone internet connections into said big platform that is so tightly integrated with the government.

I've never used CF so I could be ignorant in this matter. I assumed perhaps incorrectly that people had to verify their email address and delegate their domain(s) to CF including setting the glue records in the TLD servers meaning there is possibly a financial trail somewhere probably in the DNS registrars and perhaps a mail provider, whereas this is just drag-and-drop with no money trail.

I have no idea what guardrails they have in place in the background that blocks malware, CSAM, warez and such on their free accounts.
Bender
·그저께·discuss
There must be some really good protection on this. If I enabled such a thing on any of my servers it would be full of warez, porn, malware, CSAM and who knows what else within minutes. Curious how they manage to keep it clean.

It's ok, I was just trying to help cwmoore get the script but it looks like they already play with LLM's so I will let them figure it out from what you pasted. Thanks for contributing your script.

ARIN are the most aggressive about it. Maybe others just don't care any more. They certainly used to. I would never hear the end of it. Perhaps others pushed back enough to stop that practice elsewhere.

I use something similar and found it to balance traffic among people evenly mostly and that is sch_cake. Turns out it isn't just for home routers and works well on low traffic servers meaning I dont have like 30k+ concurrent active downloads.

tc qdisc replace dev eth0 root handle 1: cake bandwidth 4200mbit besteffort rtt 80ms nonat triple-isolate split-gso
The server is allowed 6tb/s but I don't want it to use all that. I lower to rtt to somewhere between 60ms and 80ms depending where I create the VM to optimize for the US. Default is 100ms.

The same can be applied to inbound traffic if one so desires, just makes tcpdump messy if I use -i any.

modprobe ifb numifbs=1 && ip link set dev ifb0 up
tc filter add dev eth0 parent ffff: protocol ip u32 match u32 0 0 action mirred egress redirect dev ifb0 2>/dev/null
tc qdisc add dev ifb0 root handle 1: cake bandwidth 200mbit besteffort rtt 80ms nonat triple-isolate split-gso 2>/dev/null

eth0up your last comment went auto-[dead] probably because of the python. I vouched for it, think that much worked.

I would just grab it and add to a text file URL but python cares about spaces and the script is not consistently indented 4 spaces to make it into HN code. Do you by chance have a git repo you can save it to?

Another option is to sftp it to [email protected] (no password), put in /pub/ and I can turn it into a URL. If you can reach it.

In that case I think you may be out of luck as most platform change the images. Sometimes they just remove exif data but some compress or optimize in their view the images. In that case maybe find a public site that allows archive files.
