You are injecting a lot of assumptions and wishful thinking to view the removal of ownership from this equation as a net positive.

I see no reason to assume that this would lead to the disappearance of parked cars or to more trees. Our corporate overlords will want to make use of that space for more cars or infrastructure to support the new car network, why would they ever just give it back willingly?

What that always leaves out, however, is that no/little money can very much cause a lot of unhappiness.

Is there a term yet for Rust projects rewriting GPL code to get it under non-gpl licenses?

Rustwashing?

I'd say the "threat" of local models and user independence is currently (successfully) being fought by cutting off the supply and development of general computing devices and hardware.

The mentioned big few are buying up everything regardless of need and making hardware unaffordable and unavailable for normal people (or smaller businesses). And some of the few manufacturers are already being convinced to stop developing/producing consumer hardware altogether.

And whats left might be taken care of via the rise of attestation. Just start framing local, unapproved models as "security risks" at some point.

I mean aside from the somewhat...dishonest statements from the people involved, giving false explanations is one thing, but calling people who smelled this "overreacting" gives this a weird taste.

I am neutral on such a rewrite itself, there are pros and cons to the whole "rewrite in Rust" topic. People are making decent arguments. But the way the initiator here reacted makes it seem like the Bun team itself thinks they are doing something weird here...

Guess reviewing any code isn't exactly their thing either anymore? And I guess adjusting the tests themselves is certainly one way to make things pass.

Ultimately this just seems like it was done specifically to make Bun more "ai friendly". Whether it turns out good or not that appears to be the motivation behind it.

Neither does anyone else, as is being demonstrated currently.

> You won't be 'underwhelmed' long.

This has been your constant mantra for 3 years now and is part of the reason people are underwhelmed.

Are you working on compilers? If not it seems you did not understand what is being talked about here.

Do you lack fundamental understand of those apps you built that are still in use? Did you lack understanding of their workings when you built them?

Yeah but Valve is not publicly traded, so that comparison is of course totally unfair! /s

Having skilled and happy employees that aren't constantly changing and do not spend all of their time on ways to fuck over customers and chase trends is simply impossible. Releasing a piece of hardware and leaving it open for customers to do with what they want? Linux? Not hiring people the second line goes up and then immediately firing them when line stagnates? Preposterous.

Can you elaborate or provide some context?

It is a fair note when there are a lot of people with a monetary incentive to hype up a certain piece of technology. And as gp correctly points out: "democratizing" is most commonly used in a very hostile and underhanded manner.

It is what we are talking about, hence not "counterproductive".

I will put some trust into these people if they make this a pure nonprofit organization at the minimum. Building ON measures to ensure that this will not be pushed for the most obvious cases, which is to fight user freedom. This shouldn't be some afterthought.

"Trust us" is never a good idea with profit seeking founders. Especially ones who come from a culture that generally hates the hacker spirit and general computing.

You basically wrote a whole narrative of things that could be. But the team is not even willing to make promises as big as yours. Their answers were essentially just "trust us we're cool guys" and "don't worry, money will work out" wrapped in average PR speak.

Yeah I also see the potential of LLMs to become the biggest enforcers of general technological and societal stagnation.
