> You should probably not be running your own publicly-accessible ssh servers if this email is not sufficient to at least start figuring out what your next actions are.

That seems like a fairly unreasonable stance.

That honestly just isn't a stereotype I see play out in reality aside from the sort of "pop" coders like Carmack and Stallman. Like I've met neurodiverse coders, but in roughly the same proportion as I meet neurodiverse folks in other facets of life.

I love how this community has such a disproportionate number of people who have ADHD. It's almost like programming is actually just incredibly difficult to pay attention to for any normal human being and the field is competitive enough that people basically have to find a way to get a prescription for stimulants.

(Honestly not trying to discredit anyone actually suffering from ADHD, just seem implausible to me that so many have it given that programming also just requires an unhealthy amount of attention to finish tasks in a "timely" manner).

Yeah that's fair - was just a smidge closer to "screw STEM people" than it should have been.

Not sure I like the unnecessary dig at people who study more math and don’t study enough English classes at the end there.

Ah gotcha that is very misleading.

It isn't? But the linked thread shows precisely that, and that is the title...?

For me personally it is just general (mild) annoyance with a community that somewhat consistently likes to think it is smarter and better than others and which is then only ever willing to admit they were wrong in roundabout ways like "well this was all fun, anyone who thinks it was a waste of resources or what-have-you doesn't see how much impact it had".

You can see this wild speculation play out _commonly_ for lots of will-be fads like cryptocurrency, metaverse, prompt engineering, vector databases, "autoGPT"/langchain, GPT3/4 performance degradation, GPT4 architecture, and more.

People here dress it all up in well-written prose, citing their past experience at big tech or the ivy league, but at the end of the day much of it is as misinformed as a viral 4chan post. And then, as I said, there is very little postmortem from those same posters (although to be fair, I have seen several cryptocurrency people finally admit they were wrong).

edit:

For clarity, I am not encouraging a shame-based "admit you're wrong and I'm right!" attitude. That just results in more of the same but from the other side. I am merely condoning a healthy amount of humility and acceptance that it is _absolutely_ okay to be wrong, but that it is quite important to _admit_ it (if only to yourself) in fairly clear terms.

My frustrations are largely related to social media in general and the notion that scientists are gatekeeping seems to forget about the very real effects of misinformation. None of us like to realize it, but some people really have begun to take the word of internet comments over the word of credentialed takes and it is _ruining_ society in my opinion.

HN has been a really bad experience on mobile for me. It's really difficult to tap links accurately. In particular collapsing and expanding comment threads is super annoying. I've been using Hews from the Play store instead.

Is there a timeout on repetitive chat? In RL you're temporarily blocked from chat after repeating the same phrase three times. Solves the repetition issue.

As for sarcasm, yeah that can be used to harass people but only mildly. I consider that about the least toxic possible form of chat in a competitive video game where people want to engage.

If someone hits the ball into their own goal at least someone from the team that got the goal will say "Nice shot!" sarcastically. Mildly toxic but everyone's done it at least once before and so there's usually someone else chiming in with "No problem." Ultimately works out really well. Sometimes people quit but it's rare and it's usually due to embarrassment than anger.

Edit: just to be clear, I agree with the premise that it's an unsolvable arms race with the community. I just meant to say that RL's implementation was pretty good considering that fact.

Rocket League's approach to this is very good.

The D-pad is bound to several predefined words and phrases that are useful such as "Nice shot!" or "Great pass!". Because of the fast paced nature of the game it's pretty tough to try to abuse this system (maybe by spelling words with the first letters of allowed phrases?) but no one does that.

To appease the folks who wanted to express that they were using a curse word, you can also send "$#@%!". It's really satisfying to be able to express a curse when you accidentally send the ball flying towards your own team's goal, for instance.

Of course they also have straight up text chat where they asterisk out curse words and anything that might look like personal info such as phone numbers. If you're on a console, it's unlikely you even have a keyboard hooked up. And the text input system for controllers is just too slow to type anything worthwhile in the limited time you have during goal-replays. Typing anything more than a few words means you're not helping your team which is naturally shamed and can lead to a server kick.

It drastically reduces the toxic bigotry that usually pops up on extremely popular multiplayer games. The only exception is that people sometimes have bigoted usernames which are tougher to censor for the reasons mentioned in the article.

Anyway, while I do think it's an arms race of sorts, Rocket League has gotten about as close to possible to solving the issue.
