When you zoom out on the timeline of humanity, this man, among others, will have left a huge spike in our technological progress. When I look back at the last 50 years and compare it to all known previous human history, I'm quite humbled to be alive during this timeline with them, despite some things I also greatly abhor.

It prevents talking about sexuality with children (up to 3rd grade), whether it's gay, straight, trans, furries, whatever. To say it's about one specific thing when it's about the entire subject is misrepresenting the bill.

> All that may change by 2023 — at least in new Los Angeles buildings. The L.A. City Council last week passed a motion that would ban most gas appliances in new residential and commercial construction in the city, citing an effort to combat climate change.

I understand this article is aimed at the effects this will cause on restaurants, but I think this could have much larger implications for everyone in the area. This sounds like it's going to put an artificial larger load on an aging electrical grid that is already failing due to lack of generating capacity, without adding any additional generation capacity. So more brown/blackouts during peak loads while increasing the chances of hitting the peak simultaneously by increasing load. Where are they going to get this extra power from?

> I wonder what the business model is for this

Addicting people to living in a fake world where anything is seemingly possible, and then exploiting it. Basically the same M.O. as their other products, but on a "next level."

I really doubt most users have even thought about or give a hoot about where fees are going for products they are buying on Apples platform. If the argument is "the product would cost 30% less" sure, they'd probably care. But that's not the argument. It's the relatively few (compared to users) developers and companies selling apps that are losing that money that care and are vocal about it. They would rather keep it for themselves. The end user really doesn't even figure into the equation when it comes to Apple transaction fees on their platform, because it doesn't affect them.

You're welcome. I'd highly recommend watching the interview I posted, as well as any interview you can find with him or Thomas Drake, who Binney mentions. Both of their handlings have been cited by Snowden as one of the main reasons why he leaked his info to the press vs "officially" going up the chain of command. I wouldn't want to be taking a shower in my house and have them pull the curtain open with a gun pointed to my head, either.

Saying "he died" is kind of a curious way to frame things, too. "Died" offers a completely different connotation than "killed."

Bill Binney (Tech Director/NSA) wasn't promoted. He quit just after 9/11 after He leaked that we had all of the intel to discover and piece together 9/11 in our systems, but the administration was prioritizing bulk collecting data over actually analyzing it.

> In September 2002, he, along with J. Kirk Wiebe and Edward Loomis, asked the U.S. Defense Department Inspector General (DoD IG) to investigate the NSA for allegedly wasting "millions and millions of dollars" on Trailblazer, a system intended to analyze mass collection of data carried on communications networks such as the Internet. Binney had been one of the inventors of an alternative system, ThinThread, which was shelved when Trailblazer was chosen instead. Binney has also been publicly critical of the NSA for spying on U.S. citizens, saying of its expanded surveillance after the September 11, 2001 attacks that "it's better than anything that the KGB, the Stasi, or the Gestapo and SS ever had"[11] as well as noting Trailblazer's ineffectiveness and unjustified high cost compared to the far less intrusive ThinThread.[12] He was furious that the NSA hadn't uncovered the 9/11 plot and stated that intercepts it had collected but not analyzed likely would have garnered timely attention with his leaner more focused system.[9]

Here's a really good interview with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3owk7vEEOvs

They made Steve Jobs work the graveyard shift at Atari because he stunk so bad (he'd go weeks without showering) no one wanted to work with him. That had nothing to do with his skills or job performance, but everything to do with disrupting the work environment to the point where others couldn't perform to the best of their ability.

> But Thiel doesn’t need a man-made island to avoid paying taxes. He has something just as effective: a Roth individual retirement account.

But Thiel doesn’t need a man-made island to avoid paying taxes. He has something just as effective: a very well-paid tax expert who knows the intricacies and complexity of the tax code that the politicians have created, and you don't.

It also depends on what company is doing it, apparently. Some are all for the walled garden approach when it suits their business model or they are a "fanboi" of the company/product, but despicable and evil when others do it. They're probably releasing their ire about Slack to post here on one of these companies devices right now.

This is so very cool. It really took me back to the late 70's when I was a kid and my dad built a "computer" that took up an entire 4'x6' workbench. We played lunar lander on it, but I never knew what we were doing because it was just a numerical LED display. It looked very similar. Just breadboards of modules connected by hundreds of wires. One day, my little brother was playing in the garage where the "computer" was, and discovered the wire cutters... 2 years of work gone in a few minutes. Yes, he's still alive. How, I don't really know lol. Epoxy that thing!
