I believe that in the long run a move like this will have the opposite effect:
All the technical, security and privacy aware users will leave Ubuntu and will stop promoting it. They will find another distribution they can trust and it is easy for them to move.
Currently the lens search data is sent in clear text to Canonical servers, then they send what, we don't know, to Amazon servers. Meanwhile your ISP, your government and potential men in the middle are also getting the same data.
This is nothing else than an amateur move, poorly thought out and poorly implemented.
Shame on Shuttleworth for bringing shame on Ubuntu.

Religion is the root of all evil. There is no logic to acts like this. These are people riled up by their upbringings and brainwashing in religious circumstances. Whenever I hear people taking about their imaginary friends all the time I get very cautious around them. It's sad that they always have to bring down good people, who just want to live their lives in peace.
These are no "hackers" if they do this for a violent and evil dictator. They are the equivalent of the propaganda sheep in the third reich and nothing more. They are on the wrong side of history, that's clear, bargains in an evil, inhuman game.
What? Unity is the first shell that actually properly supports multi-monitor setups. I use it with two monitors actually and it's been just amazing to work with.
Linux on the desktop isn't doomed at all. People saying the opposite are either naive or have interests to lie about it.
I am absolutely sure that Microsoft and Apple are fighting against desktop Linux any way they can as it takes away market share and any amount of market share is fought hard about these days.
In my opinion Apple and Microsoft favoured (paid off) bloggers/(ex-)developers, and opinion writers do their best to spread FUD and anti Linux propaganda all the time and everywhere. I think that a large part of the Ubuntu Unity FUD for example comes from there.
Look at any discussion remotely about Linux or Ubuntu and you will see random comments about how bad Unity is, even here in this thread. Even if the topic has nothing to do with Unity. It's not a coincidence.
I am a developer using Unity and find it the greatest thing that ever happened to Linux, and the non-developer people I support on their Ubuntu Unity machines just love it, they wouldn't want to change anything.
All I see is that the Linux desktop now is getting really competitive (yes I mean Ubuntu 12.04) and that's why we hear all this FUD now. With "competitive" I mean usability, security, ease of use and style. The market share is low, yes, but it's slowly growing and it will continue to do so.
The Linux desktop being dead is just a laughable idea when looking at the facts.
In my opinion not many Python programmers care for places like stackoverflow, as the language itself has excelent infrastructure to deal with problems and to get ones questions answered quickly without bothering other people. Maybe that's why the vote is so high there.
Everyone working with Python a little while won't even think about indentation anymore, it just comes natural. It's not a big deal.
Python is often made out in discussions like that to be for begginners only and only amateurs would use it because its slow, not concurrent etc... The truth though is that YouTube, Reddit, Dropbox, Spotify, Discuss, Google, Nasa and many other "real" professionals use Python in a big way.
Well, we'll see if this is legal in Europe. Website cookies are regulated already here, I guess this sort of abuse will have to be stopped as well. Shame on Microsoft for another outrageous decision.
This and the facebook only login, made me instantly close the site and forget it. Btw, I work two jobs: Programmer and musician. And that site was just disappointing on all fronts.
