Find a passion(s).

Understand that few people, at least in Western culture, attain wealth or social status from whatever their passion(s) may be.

If your passion(s) is associated with a relatively low-paying career, consider the possibility of keep your passion(s) as a hobby, and pursue a career that pays well and allows you time for your hobby/passion outside of work.

Understand the tremendous power of long-term, compound interest. Saving money does not seem important at 18, but doing it now makes life a hell of a lot easier down the road.

Also, establish a credit history with something like a secured credit card.

I agree with all the comments here and would like to add that this really isn't anything new. Back in the 2000s with the onset of Livejournal/AIM/Tumblr/Memes 1.0, we saw a similar kind of "internet language" develop as a form of codespeak or shibboleth communication for the in-crowd. Granted, in this case the motivation to create this language is for a different purpose: to get around algorithmic censorship.

For whatever it's worth, even with the salary cut remote employees are facing, the paybands for FAANG employees in (relatively) affordable cities are still top-of-market.

For example, remote GOOG employees in Atlanta take a 10-20% salary cut compared to the Bay Area salaries. But the net takehome is still higher (on average) than the takehome for the in-office Bay Area engineers. And the overall compensation is better than >80% of existing Atlanta metro SWE compensation.

That's part of the reason why there has been such a huge influx of people to metros like Atlanta, Charlotte, Detroit, etc.

I don't know how much flak I will get for making a comment like this, but feel it's important to point out the data is obviously biased for (or at least the article doesn't specifically call out):

1. Western society's influence 2. Cultural background influence 3. Sex assigned at birth influence

ITT: People using their subjective remote-work opinions in defending Google's desire to increase their profits by sacrificing their own employees' well-being.

At the risk of this discussion devolving into a flamewar, I would just encourage you to do your own research about this situation.

Regardless of all other arguments about location-based pay, Google et al have been paying their temporarily-remote employees 100% of their salary up until now.

These companies would need to spend lots of resources to legally navigate pay cuts to already-agreed-upon contracts.

And they would also have to weigh the risk of those employees leaving for better pay elsewhere.
