It's too bad you guys aren't incorporated in the EU[0].

Looking at that, Google is only allowed to protect its content with database rights for 15 years after publication, with "substantial additions" getting the same 15 years from the moment of their publishing. I bet there is an interesting legal argument in if modifying opening hours or location of a PoI is considered a "substantial addition", because otherwise any PoI (including businesses) added up to July 2011 would be fair game now :). Not that OSM has the financial means to fight off a behemoth like Google.

Tbh, even then, OSM itself states: "The project is not an exercise in copying maps while trying to avoid copyright traps. We create maps without copying at all! That is the challenge we have set for ourselves.", so the point is moot.

I do wish Apple would just incorporate OSM's PoI data. Right now their's is complete garbage compared to Google Maps and OSM, missing vast swathes of info (or being woefully out of date) in almost all cities.

Raw Information cannot be licensed, and I am not sure why OSM sticks to the policy that it can.

Google Maps does not hold the rights to which opening hours Bob's Bakery keeps. If someone entered them from Bob's Bakery their site onto Maps, you are free to type it off of Maps onto OSM. Legally anyway. OSM themselves still hold the policy you can't, so you should adhere to that.

iPhone batteries are actually relatively easy to access and replace. The only annoying thing that Apple (and most other gadgets) insist on is adhesive strip mounting of the battery. Just use screws please.

It goes beyond engineering. An account just out of university isn't allowed to sign off on anything, only after a next step can they co-sign, and they need yet another step to be the primary signer.

Depending on the country, there's also a level you need to attain as lawyer to argue in higher courts.

Any human would have taglined this "vibrate to magnetic charging puck with computer vision".

It just feels horribly low effort. Respect your fellow man.

This is the most hilarious, ironic thing of it all. If you want secure, high performance, you run Chinese models like DeepSeek on your own (or trusted) infra. Meanwhile you can never trust OpenAI and Anthropic's models.

Panther Lake is impressive for x86, but decidedly middling when stacked up against a field including ARM.

The problem is that x86 can (almost) match ARM battery life but at much worse performance, or match the performance at much worse battery life. That's what the statistics don't show you when they show either max performance or max battery life tests.

I repeat it rather often on this site but it's because they're such impressive numbers: an M1 Ultra gets 70% of the performance of an RTX 3090 at 25% of the power envelope, and it beats out a desktop class Core i9 from that era at 30% of the power envelope.

Nvidia, Intel and AMD would commit murder for those kind of perf per watt numbers.

> Battery life? 20 hours of video playback.

Yeah, they pretty much lied about that. It is only in a special Windows ultra-power saving mode that heavily throttles background tasks, forces the screen to be 30% lower brightness, heavily downclocks the CPU (50%+ less performance!), etc; The MacBook has to do no such tricks.

You're not gonna see Frameworks that equal the perf-per-watt of Apple until they release a model with a Snapdragon chip.

Frameworks have one benefit that other laptops don't: there's only a few parts. So for example for your Framework speakers you can find an EasyEffects / Pipewire (+bankstown?) tune profile that makes them sound better than 99% of laptops on the market. It's basically the Raspberry Pi effect.

I guess all the grandmas on the beach that look like they have a leather hide for a skin didn't get the memo that the sun doesn't cause damage after all.

In all seriousness: don't listen to OP, use sunscreen whenever possible.

Do they work with the network or with the app?

If it's the first, that seems like they would be a vastly superior offering to AirTags, especially outside America, where people aren't so Apple-crazy.

Yes, but AppleCare+ is one service applied to whole series. A 20% price hike on a $1000 iPhone would be $200. Equalling 4-5 years of warranty would mean you need to put in at least $600 in AppleCare+, vastly more expensive than the $200.

You're completely right that the math changes with a $10,000 laptop though. Damn that number just sounds bonkers every time :)

They EU could just require these companies to label the button "license" instead of "buy"

DisplayPort still doesn't have anything as good as CEC. DDC/CI exists and bizarrely enough has existed for much longer than CEC (since the DVI port era), but DisplayPort Alliance has never bothered to standardize it and iterate on it.

For example, some monitors crash if you read any value from the monitor, so you can only blindly send brightness or volume levels. Some internally use 255 instead of 100. Some have crappy flash and you will wear it out by sending values constantly. Etc, etc.

Because none of that requires "AI". You can use a script to clone GitHub top NPM repos (by whatever measure), and then 'simply' try to migrate them to Deno and log all the errors and warnings. Maybe you compile those errors in a neat list with an LLM, and ask it to emphasize things it considers important. But even that can be done inside the script with loglevels and maybe some regex.

Parent is getting downvoted because they're suggesting something that is akin to "why are you running this simple, reliable, efficient Python script instead of feeding inputs to an LLM and praying you get the outputs you want".

Respect yourself by respecting your craft.

The EU price includes the warranty, which is at least 2 years but is officially for "the expected life of the product", which in the case of an $10,000 laptop would probably be a decade plus.

With new fabs built and AI demand shrinking, they will have to. If they don't, considering the last lost price fixing case, they will be absolutely crushed by the EU and probably other governments as well.
