I completely agree. I wake up in the morning and hack on some stuff of my own for an hour or two, go to work as a developer all day, get back around 8 and hack till 2-3am each and every day. I am amazed by most of the people i meet in the profession that are work-only programmers, and have never written anything for themselves in their lives. It's pitiful. No wonder they stink.

Given that getting a random key is an insignificant use case, i can't see where you come up with that maps are broken. That's like saying getting a car to fly is tedious.
My experience has been identical to yours. Ask simple questions, get constant failures. In bad times, the signal to noise ratio is completely out of wack. A recession is the worst time to hire people.
