Everyone on the planet is planning to route around the US financial system. We shot ourselves in the foot over a trade war we lost.

I tend to think this was a malicious release. There was quite a bit of tension between the US and China when this virus emerged. I would not be surprised if the US released this virus in Wuhan during the War Games of 2019.

If China was attempting to attack the planet, why would they release a virus in their own country when releasing it in any major city would've been just as easy?

Almost a decade and the echo chamber here is still missing the boat on the most revolutionary asset of the millennia. Bitcoin is a bullshit tester and it proves most people here know very little about practical applied economics.

This is a poor take, I addressed the false $300B channel claim elsewhere in the thread but was downvoted so my response is invisible.

The HN echo chamber must stay intact at all costs I guess.

Difference is L2 BTC transactions are uncensorable, instant, and the BTC itself cannot be confiscated.

>This is of course after you consider opening a single LN channel for every human on earth would take 75 years and 300 billion dollars if the chain did nothing else.

This is completely wrong. Custodial wallets exist, side chains (liquid network) exist and if you need more security, wallets like Phoenix exist that allow instant dedicated channel opening for 3000 SATs (~$1.50, which is less than the 3% fee for a single $100 Visa/Mastercard tx).

Don't forget, when the Bitcoin price 100Xs again, throughput of existing lightning channels will 100x as well (LN node with $50M of channel capacity will automatically turn into a $5B node with 0 intervention).

You wrongly believe scaling is a lot more complicated than it actually is.

Racists are so uncreative and unintelligent. Non-white students paying good money for an education should ask for this garbage to be removed. Anything that is racist and still celebrated is fair game. Locals and staff that got comfortable with this nonsense obviously need to learn the lessons that they missed.

If it's a guaranteed malicious release, any student of history will tell you China is one of the least likely to carry out an attack like this.

The US (Fort Detrick), Japan, UK, and Germany all rank higher on the list of potential suspects than China.

You can't say how efficient it is without calculating how layer 2 scaling affects per transaction energy usage. You can do millions of layer 2 transactions that eventually settle as 1 transaction on the main chain.

You can do 1+ million lightning network transactions that will settle as 1 transaction on the BTC blockchain, so ~$93/1,000,000? Sounds amazingly cheap for uncensorable transactions.

ESG people are trying to solve something that is already solved. POW is here to stay and will scale tremendously well as we all move to layer 2.

I'm quite comfortable but would never advocate slavery for any human being. If anything these prisoners should be paid a minimum wage and funds only released post completion of sentence. A significant % of recidivism is due to being poor and having little to no options from my understanding.

>Because when you break the law and get caught, you give up your freedom to choose.

Being poor in the USA is a criminal offense.

Both of your statements come from a place of tremendous privilege and the rationalizing of slavery ($0.20-0.50 of income in 2021 is good?) so some of the largest companies in the US and the defense department can manufacture goods with huge profit margins is problematic. Perhaps more independent research about this topic is required on your end.

We initiated a trade war with China a few years ago. The idea that this move was done "quietly" is a Reuter's joke.

African schoolgirls being kidnapped is very different than an apartheid state where the colonizers regularly oppress and murder the indigenous. In May 2021, when that tweet was posted, Palestinian homes were being stolen by what is considered an illegitimate state. Those anti-Israeli posts didn't come out of nowhere.

Since Israelis and pro-zionists have a bad habit of calling every legitimate criticism and boycott of Israel "antisemitic", I and many others suspect these numbers of incidents are inflated due to willful miscategorization.

It seems like an effort is being made to use 1000 social media posts as a reason to create avenues to further shutdown legitimate criticisms.

Study anti-fragilty.

This article is dead. It took me a long time to argue against it because I assumed you knew what "adaptability" of bitcoin meant in practice. It seems you didn't and will need to do a lot more research before discussing viable attacks in the future.

Your attack vector fails and we know Satoshi knew the game theory and outcomes of just this scenario over a decade ago, as it is detailed in his posts on the bitcointalk forums. They are a great starting point for you to learn more about bitcoin's various defense mechanisms.

You seem to believe that in the face of an attack Bitcoin will not adapt, that is a fatal error. There are many methods of reaching consensus available in the toolbox and the number is only growing. Proof of work failing does not equal Bitcoin failing, you might be a bit confused about this point.

---Responding here due to rate limit...

Variations of POW, POS, POK, etc....are easy drop in replacements that are actively being developed as we speak. Most of those alts you speak of have Bitcoin DNA at their core.

>And even if it does, nothing prevents me from 51% attacking that one, too.

Good luck attacking Bitcoin with a proof of stake hybrid that requires owning 51% of the supply to succeed, when the majority of the supply is already issued and is not available for sale. That's why I keep stating that a 51% attack/defeating POW is just the beginning of the work the Fed has to do...

---Rate limit response part 2....

>Finally, this is all kind of irrelevant to the article.

I think you are admitting defeat in long form. The article itself is irrelevant because it doesn't consider the 2nd order effect of any attack. Bitcoin is considered anti-fragile for a reason, it gets stronger as it gets attacked. The developer communities (including the devs working on alts) are an inextricable part of its anti-fragility.

>not some imaginary future thing we might or might not be able to invent after the Fed 51%s actual bitcoin to oblivion.

I could hit a target where it was positioned x years ago... Big Whoop. You aren't defeating its current form, so you lose, repeatedly, and debase the currency (USD) further in the process.

After a few trillion dollar USD expended on failed attacks, the currency being issued will be debased enough to be noticeable by consumers. This "infinite money printer" argument is not thought through. The outcome of more debasement is more demand for bitcoin aka undebaseable money.

Bitcoiners know there is a hyper inflationary event coming soon, I'm sure many would love to induce it by getting the fed to burn money attacking bitcoin :D

>People may want to participate in mixing, but then they won’t be able to get their money back in the US.

I see the issue here, you think the endgame is for bitcoiners is to own more fiat. That is not the goal, fiat is dead to most bitcoiners, they will hold until fiats currencies implode like they constantly do.

You seem to think the choice of money originates with banks or governments, it doesnt. The primary form of money is chosen by the masses. Good luck stopping billions of people that choose to opt out of bad money.
mikeblackson

They are not winning. The fiat standard is imploding as we speak, have you not recognized that yet? Any attack on a popular network exposes a larger audience to the fraud that central banks engage in. Hence, central banks don't survive in the sunlight.
mikeblackson

Wrong, a 51% attack by itself will not take down Bitcoin. There is follow up work that I don't think they are competent enough to complete.
