Dont count on it. They will patent the encoders, the decoders, the container. Unless you code to the exact bitstream using the same exact software to encode that bitstream they could go after you. You are precluded in entirety from doing anything novel if you want to "use the patented inventions." These patents don't compose, they compost America's ability to innovate.
These mockups look great. The world would be a better place if this idea was followed through on by someone. I don't see it being the source of huge financial gain (comfortable hopefully), the social gain is immense.
I wanted the same thing as a vertical for music teachers. Target the teachers not the students. Students will come when there are teachers. It doesn't have to be pure-virtual, initially it can just be an in-out board.
Also it should be subject focused with puts (I have skill x and am willing to teach) or calls (needs to be taught a skill). Calculus, beginning programming or linguistics. Subjects that many students have mental roadblocks getting over that require the tutor to map the roadblock and route around it.
h.264 doesn't have a patent cliff. The move from mpeg1->2->4 has been one of gradual refinement. Like the move from 1 pixel to .5 pixel motion estimation. We should be using a layered codec so those ridiculous patents can be folded in as they expire.

That cost MS hundreds of million dollars in development and lost opportunities. You can only do that if you have no competition. If they had added USB support to NT4 we wouldn't have needed to go to win2k. Really MS, NT4 can't support USB? They should have evolved NT4 rather than fork it into the win2k -> xp -> vista mess. They could have had the worlds best UNIX but internal dogma forced them piss in their own watering hole.

I used to ask a question about euclidean distance calculations between points in a SQL database.
