Boko Haram is not a mentally disabled person tricked by the FBI they are real terrorists who attack schools to stop children from learning. They're the epitome of stupid and backwards.

If demand and prices keep rising without production capacity being built fast enough, there will likely eventually be a rush leading to overinvestment and price crashes, but there are too many other factors involved; state investment for security, international politics and trade relations, the possibility of an AI bubble burst, etc.

If the increased demand is not short term, production capacity will eventually increase. In the meantime, the logistics disruptions and industrial material shortages and energy inflation will disappear as soon as the wars disrupting them stop, which should bring prices down.

Taiwan is tiny, far from Ukraine, and the majority of the economy is TSMC. Just because they're also Chinese doesn't mean they have the ability to make everything China does.

Way more than 10%, because Hispanics are not considered mixed race even though most of us are.

There's no plausible level of quality that reduces bugs to zero. More lines being written means more bugs being written, that's a statistical fact.

Not really. Transcribing long sequences of nonsense is annoying but quite easy to do without error as long you're patient enough to follow a simple process of reading, typing, and double-checking character-by-character.

From a quick search, Linux kernel is ~40 million loc, freebsd ~9 million, openbsd ~3 million. Number of bugs compared to lines of code leaves FreeBSD looking worse than Linux.

It's hyperbolic but mostly right. Wars raged on every continent outside the Americas and millions upon millions died. All those wars started at different times, but ended about the same, so they're all "WWII".

It's called a world war in english because everyone and everywhere was at war during that time. Pretty much every group has a name for it in their own language.

National security letters or old boys network or maybe just fat bribes to the right engineer. Could be a requirement for government procurement too, so not a law, just the requirement of a huge customer with deep pockets and negative price sensitivity.

It's often necessary for liability and anywhere cash is handled it's much better for everyone to have cameras and drawer logs than just blindly trusting your employees.

A lot of people who live in dense environments are already surveilled every minute of every day, the surveillance is just not centralized. At home a voice assistant listens to everything, and the apartment building probably has corridor cameras. On the street cameras watch from neighbors with doorbell or security cams, store and parking lot security cams, traffic cameras, gopros, random streamers etc. If they work in retail most of their workplace will be on camera all the time. What would have psychological effects is an authoritarian nanny state monitoring those feeds all the time for any potential infraction, not the surveillance which is routine and actually pretty reasonable.

Shame about the paywall.

> Stowaway Australian cockroaches covered the floors at night and destroyed everything they could get their mandibles on, including much of the salad crop and both of the kitchen’s microwave ovens (they ate the wiring). The broad mite, a pest that normally afflicts tea plants, broadened its horizons in this special setting and killed the entire potato crop. In the Ocean, the biospherians engaged in a battle of wits with stowaway octopi who had been accidentally introduced into the habitat and whose voracity was only eclipsed by their cunning. After the first few weeks they were never seen, but their depredations continued.

Sounds like they should have added insect farming to supplement their food supply. Most cockroaches are edible when cooked. Yeast or maybe some engineered creatures to produce whatever is needed might be interesting for a modern attempt.

Assembly generation is actually pretty simple, it's optimizing everything that's difficult. Writing an assembler is a great way to get acquainted with compiler construction, because you don't need to think about optimization and types and the other features that make high level languages complicated aren't needed.

I mean, hangings and torture used to be done publicly and people would gather to watch in large crowds, even bringing the whole family. There are still people who travel to witness death-row executions for no apparent reason than their own pleasure. This kind of morbid obsession with violence and trivialization of it as a spectacle has become much less common as people have become more civilized with time, but I doubt it will ever fully disappear.

> At Ford Dearborn Truck Plant, workers reported Wednesday that managers and maintenance supervisors were issuing orders to remove or cover electrical receptacles used by workers to power fans at their workstations. All plugged-in fans must be removed by July 13, according to the order described by workers.

A parser combinator takes parsers as input and produces a new parser. The basic parsers are very simple, but they are combined together to produce more complex parsers.
