How high are OpenAI's compute costs? Possibly a lot higher than we thought

I think they're concentrating on users and not benchmarks. Gemini is still the best model at plain old searches, like, for parsing images or "what's that poem with this and this in it". It seems to have much more breadth of reasoning than any of the other models, e.g. Gemini 3.1 is still the top model on simple-bench other than Fable.

New 3.5 Flash model is clearly quite optimized for speed. People on this site just look at benchmarks, and underestimate how vital speed is to user experience. No other free model comes close in terms of speed and intelligence, so it seems like the correct strategy to slowly win the mass market, as almost everyone will form their experience of AI through its free version.

Is that surprising? It is standard "embrace, extend, extinguish" from a company not in a strong enough position to do the third one.

DeepMind did release a math specific model. And OpenAI has released a coding specific model.

The answer to your question is “because the market isn’t big enough”, not because it doesn’t work. Why would knowing about 2019 internet memes help you in any way at coding?

Because it's an important aid to getting to a high-paying job in the US, not just a means to learn.

One need only look at the resume filtering process, a once manual bias that has now been codified into algorithmic bias with AI. A degree from a good school boosts your chances immensely, and other facets such as coursework don't matter much.

If you have ever seen someone filter applicant resumes, you will understand instantly. There are too many, you have to filter them somehow and the allure is irresistible.

So? It’ll never pay dividends..

That’s absurd. Why couldn’t it still fail, especially when their last raise was at 20x revenue or more? These numbers are horrendous.

Sam Altman is not one of those people. But other founders certainly felt that way.

Anthropic's S-1 is not public yet

Anthropic talks to the Pope and hires ethicists and philosophers. All founders have pledged to donate 80% of their wealth. They have pledged to never use ad tech because of misaligned incentives. There is an independent board.

Meanwhile Greg Brockman is worth all the Anthropic founders PUT TOGETHER, he and his wife are the single largest donors to Trump, and he and Altman have formed a board full of sycophants and stolen a non-profit. When Altman was fired, they manipulated their morally bereft, money-hungry employees to get their own way. They have reneged on every single promise they've made as soon as it's inconvenient.

Why do I care about the models again?

Stargate is not real.

It is not clear that running one's own datacenter is a competitive advantage. Why do you think OpenAI can handle that?

Many people worked for FTX, loved SBF and would have said he was a great leader too. People will love anyone who is good to them.

This is common rhetoric that feels overly reductionist and makes me sad. Sam got fired and his response was to manipulate and pressure his employees into a shameful, cult-like letter, and play the media to character assassinate Toner as being underqualified and stupid.

His biggest competitor asks people in the interview process if they’d be willing to give up their Anthropic stock for the good of society.

Surely you cannot just close your eyes and say they’re the same. Don’t allow evil to roam free under the guise of merely “imperfection”.

I assume you're trolling, but in case otherwise:

The reason media training exists is to win over people like you.

I know people high up at OpenAI, I'm quite sure Altman etc. don't care either; the only difference is, they've been trained well to hide it.

You prefer Altman -- someone who will lie and cheat and backstab and work on autonomous military drones and video generators and adult chatbots, give his entire life and being, in order to amass as much power and influence as he can -- because you don't like Dario's smile?

Mine as well. I pay for Gemini and Claude but prefer Gemini.

I don't understand the hate Gemini gets on this site. It is quite well-rounded, it is often better at tasks without benchmarks, like translation, but nobody gives credit where credit's due.

I can't ever forget that blog post where OpenAI advertised ChatGPT's improved image understanding, showing a labelled motherboard with several errors -- then someone posted Gemini's work on the exact same picture, with every component labelled perfectly. That doesn't show up on benchmarks but it matters to real people.

I agree, but I'm taking as an axiom that some amount of bribery (tribute, really) had to be done, that Apple could avoid massive government retribution. In that lens, this bribery, while bad, is the least destructive form it could have taken. It being so gaudy actually helps this case.

It's fair to say there is not much contrast. But he's kept Apple's DEI and climate commitments in place even after being attacked directly, while Zuckerberg, Musk and Altman are proactively broadcasting right-wing talking points, sometimes pre-emptively. Yes, Cook gave $1 million, but Brockman gave $25 million, and Musk gave much, much more.

I admire how Tim Cook participates in US politics. He is doing the most while giving the least. I would do the same in his position, he is making the best of a difficult situation, and it is his duty to protect his company and employees.

Giving a golden statue of Trump has no effect on you and me, and a very large effect on Trump. He is gaining significant political capital while giving up nothing that matters (feel free to correct if I am wrong). Contrast with every other tech executive, lawyer, and university dean in America, most of whom have been cowed into compromising on their deepest values, or even worse, have done so without hesitation. I cannot think of many tech execs whom history will be kinder towards.

People got attached to ELIZA. Why would I care what the general public thinks?

I think of how trading firms cannot say their strategies, as they would lose their effectiveness.

Or how many people know that many CEOs and leaders are idiots, but cannot say it, as they would face retribution.
