“the US, in siding with Russia, may be betting on the wrong horse”

This is delusional. Russia would’ve bulldozed Ukraine without US support. What county is under US sanctions? What country is receiving US weapons? Which, to be sure, is the correct choice. And having public spars with Ukraine is not.

But the fact that someone just typed this out and posted it is just so delusional. The fact that people upvoted this is delusional.

On March 16, 2014, the President issued Executive Order 13661, which expanded the scope of the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13660, and found that the actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation with respect to Ukraine undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine; threaten its peace, security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity; and contribute to the misappropriation of its assets.

…Therefore… I [Trump]… am continuing… Execute Order 13660.

I don’t know why this pisses me off so much. Ostensibly we agree broadly. It’s just, HN really used to have such good nuanced and factual discussions, even outside tech. Now it’s all just raw anger.

Software development is an outlier in that companies don't tend to care where you went to school. Lots of firms on Wall Street will only hire from a few schools, or sometimes even a single school. It makes sense Jane Street would be somewhere in between.

Being told you're wrong is helpful. It helps you build up a correct view of the world and figure out the right direction to go. If you're driving in the wrong direction it's better to be told that sooner rather than later, even if that doesn't tell you what turn to make.

I think you're blaming your own personality problems on HN. I'm sorry that you wrote your Dad off without helping him, but it's completely appropriate that a commenter here will tell you you're wrong without sitting down and helping you. We're not your "Tech Brothers", but your Dad is your Dad, so treat him as such.

Reading the comments here I feel like HN lives in a completely parallel universe. The number of employees who have the ability to threaten to quit and not immediately get fired are very very few. Even at the executive level you can't just make ultimatums for your employment and expect that they won't consider just firing you. Even if you're the representative of a union speaking on behalf of thousands of employees you need make sure you have enough leverage before making demands like that.

This not some crazy conspiracy that she got fired. It would be noteworthy if someone who did what she did didn't get fired.

> they are looking to assuage their conscious through statements like these

Statements like these still put pressure on Google. It's possible to care enough to say something, without caring enough to go beyond talk, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's all performative.
