Hindi and Urdu are two completely different languages. Hindi has more words from Sanskrit. Urdu borrows more words from Farsi (If I am not wrong) and due to political reasons covers some holes with words from English. I am a native Hindi speaker. I can understand 80-90% of Urdu but cannot appreciate Urdu poetry etc. To give an analogy its like African Elephant & Indian Elephant. Different species.
Display network conversions are notoriously low. Go to your adwords account and check which websites are giving you very high CTR (15% or more). I am sure you will find a lot of sketchy websites with high CTR. Exclude these websites from your campaign.
Since you may have a limited adwords budget I recommend you run highly targeted ads.
Finally $100 spent on adwords is too low an amount to reach to any conclusion.
Not to mention India's spitting problem. Indian don't need a reason to spit all sorts of things from plain spit to phlegm. A large number of Indians are addicted chewing tobacco and keep spitting on roads, market places, stairwells, lifts (escalators) inside buses and from buses.
India is one of the dirtiest places. I think too much democracy is a bad thing.
I had taken 3 programming courses at engineering school. 2 were machine level languages and C. I have not created anything worthwhile apart from a college project in C (online reservation system). That was way back in 2001. After having worked in finance industry for 12 plus years I am trying to reinvent myself as a programmer.
I started by learning ruby. I liked pragmatic programmer's guide to ruby (the pickaxe book). The concepts are explained in very clear and practical manner. In my experience learning from a book increases the speed of learning. But I think learning from reading manual is also not a bad idea. It takes more time and gets hands dirty but then one learns so many things.
BTW I abandoned Ruby in favour of PHP is because I think there are more freelancer projects in PHP including Wordpress development projects.
Agree with you. LivingSocial ran a big "spam" ad campaign targeted towards India in 2011. They would show ads online asking users to sign up to check deals in local cities.
After signing up one would find that LivingSocial was not serving ANY Indian city. It seems the objective of the campaign was to collect e-mail ids.
