As part of an ongoing performance evaluation campaign, we are planning to run a study on the performance delivered by a variety of network operators across the United States. The campaign will focus on a variety of network performance metrics such as network speed and latency. The results of this research will be used to create a public report on Internet performance across a variety of ISPs, particularly focusing on alternative connection technologies (e.g., Starlink, TMobile 5G Home Internet, Verizon 5G Home Internet). To participate it is enough to respond to a one minute survey you find at this page: https://uchicago.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eCFrZhRhNphkV...

*Frequently Asked Questions*
The following questions are intended to inform volunteers on the procedure of the measurement campaign as well as to clarify any doubts regarding the data collected and its use during and after the campaign. If you have additional questions feel free to contact us at [email protected]
*What steps are required to participate in the campaign?*
If you sign up and are selected, we will send you a device that easily connects to your home network. Once the device is connected, it will measure your Internet performance automatically, and those results will be used to create the public report. You will be able to review your Internet’s performance online anytime while you are participating in the measurement program. Once the campaign is over, we will send you a shipping label to ship back the device to us.
*What measurement tests will you perform?*
Measurements performance tests by the installed device will target common networking metrics such as network speed and latency. This tests will generate artificial traffic towards a well-known server, similar to how speedtest.net works.
*Will measurements impact my home network performance?*
No. Our system exclusively runs experiments when it detects that no other traffic is being generated from the home.
*Will I be compensated for participating in the campaign?*
We will compensate you for your participation with a $25 Amazon gift card.
*Will any personal information be collected or shared?*
No, our system does not collect any personal information. Moreover, all network performance metrics collected are anonymized before* being exported of the system and will not be tied in any way to the home where they were collected.
*About NetMicroscope Inc.*
NetMicroscope strives to develop innovative solutions to help network operators better understand the performance of their network and maximize the performance delivered to their customers. NetMicroscope lays its foundations on more than a decade of research in network performance monitoring. NetMicroscope founders are experts on network operations, measurement, and security and their work developed comprehensive measurement and analysis tools to turn network data into actionable insights. *The reward will be send to volunteers on the condition that their device will remain active for the entire duration of the campaign.
This is one of the authors and developers of the system.
Traffic Refinery is a cost-aware network traffic analysis library implemented in Go. It works at line rate up to 10gbps. Traffic Refinery is tailored towards the development of Machine Learning models for network inference. To achieve this goal, the system allows to 1) collect different statistics from captured traffic and 2) profile the cost of the collection of each feature to better understand how feasibly such collection would be in production.
The system uses a conveninent configuration system to specify which subportions of traffic you want to track and what statistics to collect from the flows belonging to the observed traffic. Subportions of traffic are specified using DNS properties (e.g., domain names) or by IP addresses. The systems comes with standard traffic statistics built-in and ready to be collected (e.g., packet/byte counters, jitter) but new ones can be easily implemented by the simple writing of a go function. Examples are available in the documentation.
We are happy to answer any questions either here or via email, and solve any issue you might have using the github repo issues page.
